FR DNS problems...
today

DNS lookups failing for FR here - no such host. Apparently I'm not the only one, judging from a glance at the Yahoo FR board. Dunno if it's my ISP (Verizon) or what, but I had to manually edit the hosts file to get here. Presumably, if you can post, you're not having this problem, but there are more than a few people who can't post right now because of it...

You are so lovely to say that - you just made my week. :) Thank you for that, and for everything you are doing here.
So, I suppose you will be staying up all night with geek emergnecy sustenance - a box of altoids, beef jerky, and Dr. Pepper/coffee?

Oh, you are a smarty [smartie?]!! Those are cute, and ALL in a row too!

Hmmm - guess I don't know as much about this stuff as I thought. It's interesting - if I type in the IP address of the site, then all of the article links continue to come up with the IP address at the beginning. If I type in freerepublic.info, then the same links all start with that.
Is this a web/protocol artifact, or something that the interior software of the site is generating. I believe all of the pages at FR are dynamically generated, but if they are structured on the way you address them, then I'm doubly impressed with the site design. Does anyone who is a bigger geek then me know what is being done?

You're right, I should have calmed down and done a little investigation of the thread first :-) But when I finally got in I said a huge "YESSSS!" and just started typing (always a bad idea).
Haven't read far enough down to see all the details yet, but the problem is apparently being dealt with and am I ever so glad to be back! Free Republic Rocks.
Thanks for the info and the thread.

FR isn't html or htm. More like asp. If the domain extension gets changed all it does is change the front page and mean we have to log in again.
At least it seems that way to me. Of course, I have no idea what I am talking about. =o)

They look really large, I saw a rowboat or canoe beyond them. Thanks for the laugh! I don't have any ducks to post!

Oh, my - no, no. I'm going to bed - I just checked, and it's still not working here. But there's not much I can do about it now, other than perhaps bug Verizon if it's not fixed in the morning, after I have my coffee ;)

That's okay. You find the thread, and your first reaction is "G**D*MMIT WHAT THE H***'S GOING ON AROUND HERE?" - we've all been there, I guess ;)

If I remember my web server stuff - I believe that the server is able to capture the entire requested URL (what you type into the browser). If you (FR) are dynamically generating the pages you could strip off the domain from the request and use that to generate the links on the pages. That, however, would be (at least to me) a really impressive feature to incorporate into the design of a web site. It is working so well, it seems like it has to be something simpler.

phew.... I thought I was going crazy.
FR hasn't worked for me all day.
Then I remembered the yahoo group... yay!!!
The shakes were subsiding, but the hallucinations were beginning.

After you save, www.freerepublic.com should work normally, at least
until the IP address changes, in which case remove the entry or update
it with the new address.
This in effect creates your own private DNS entry. This is needed to
log on because of the way FR's login scripts are written. They don't
work right with an http IP address.
I just wish I understood what you are saying.
