FR DNS problems...
today

DNS lookups failing for FR here - no such host. Apparently I'm not the only one, judging from a glance at the Yahoo FR board. Dunno if it's my ISP (Verizon) or what, but I had to manually edit the hosts file to get here. Presumably, if you can post, you're not having this problem, but there are more than a few people who can't post right now because of it...

Sorry, I don't know where the hosts file resides on Mac. Try search?
Anyway, you are logged in somehow because you are posting. :))

ICANN is dragging their "brains" on this one (little surprise). ICANN isn't the bad guy in the FR/DNS-disappear matter. I know you can use yor brain to get to the bottom of it.

ICANN isn't the bad guy in the FR/DNS-disappear matter. I know you can use yor brain to get to the bottom of it. Two questions; who runs the DNS servers, and how often do they get updated? We got back into good standing with GKG about 1 pm Central, so the holdup in being able to use freerepublic.com as the address would either be that the DNS servers haven't yet been scheduled to update or whoever is running them has decided not to include us.

We need to send out to our international friends who may not automatically look to yahoo (and certainly not DU) for clues. Swarthyguy, AmericaninTokyo, MadTomRackham, on and on.
I realize the DNS entries will be corrected soon, but we don't want FReeper withdrawal bridge-jumping on our conscience:)

Of course I could not find my notes about alternate ways to get in or to go to Yahoo groups, so it's been withdrawal time all day today. I hate it when that happens. I had the same problem. Then I looked up the domain registration and used one of the name server addresses at the bottom of the listing (NS.ROBINSON-DEFEHR.COM) with nslookup.exe to find the IP:
C:\>nslookup
Default Server: 172.31.1.2
Address: 172.31.1.2
> server NS.ROBINSON-DEFEHR.COM
Default Server: NS.ROBINSON-DEFEHR.COM
Address: 209.157.64.254
> freerepublic.com
Server: NS.ROBINSON-DEFEHR.COM
Address: 209.157.64.254
Name: freerepublic.com
Address: 209.157.64.200
> exit
C:\>
I used
http://gandi.net/whois?l=EN to find the domain registration (cheese eating domain lookup monkey).
The normal lookup is still failing for me.

Sorry Steve......
The requested document does not exist on this server.

Finally got back in -- but via a Google search for "freerepublic backup site yahoo" ... and http://209.157.64.200/ worked, but not the site name. The withdrawal side-effects have been interesting.
I've been suspecting the troll, too.

some of us made it but hope the problem is fixed soon. Few people know how to find the domain.
To: justshe
'Twas an experiment. I thought I could get it to work, but I was mistaken. Guess any cross-thread links are going to have to use the IP address for a while.

If you ever have trouble getting in, do a good search under your FR name and then click on the link that comes up. Works most of the time for me. That is how I got in today...after I checked to make sure I was logged in :)
To: ladyinred; John Robinson
Perhaps John should get Richard Clarke to investigate...see if it's a cyber security issue. Oh, wait...he's busy hawking his "Against All Bushes" book.

Maybe by tomorrow it'll back to normal.
I was referring the poster's remarks about slowness, etc, over the past few days.

Good thought; the question is, how. Most of them don't supply their e-mail addresses on their profile page for good reason.
