FR DNS problems...
today | self

Posted on 03/25/2004 7:48:57 AM PST by general_re

DNS lookups failing for FR here - no such host. Apparently I'm not the only one, judging from a glance at the Yahoo FR board. Dunno if it's my ISP (Verizon) or what, but I had to manually edit the hosts file to get here. Presumably, if you can post, you're not having this problem, but there are more than a few people who can't post right now because of it...

Hasn't filtered thru here yet.

I just added the # sign in front of the IPS number for FR in my hosts file...to disable it.

Tried to log in thru standard means......and no go!

Removed the # to reactivate that command....and logged right back on.

So all is NOT well for some yet.

Thanks once again for fixing a ICANT/GKG/DUmmie screw-over.

I'll say this much, it's a lot faster loading and refreshing without a lot of folks coming by to visit or post. Unfortunately that defeats the whole purpose of the site. Hope it gets back to normal ASAP.

The site sure runs faster today. Pretty good evidence that the slowdowns are server performance related. Politics are busy this week.

It's screwy even from up here in Canada. That's really strange, the DNS entry for free republic must be toast on all name servers.

You're on FR. I didn't log into Yahoo, and I'm here.

I did a Google search about FR being down earlier, and someone else reported that they had a file that was attempting to download when they visited the homepage using the standard domain name. So it doesn't seem to be just you.

You're on FR, but you're using the IP address (the set of 4 numbers after the http://). Things should be completely normal by tomorrow (or whenever the domain name servers (which translate the .com/.org/et al addresses to the IP addresses actually used).

When ICANN orders something wiped off the DNS'es, it happens quickly.

Unacceptable runaround from Go Daddy ...

Response (RYAN HUISMAN) 03/25/2004 12:45 PM

Dear George,

Thank you for contacting customer support. Please note that the providing false WHOIS information on a domain registration can be grounds for canceling a domain's registration.

It is the domain registrant's responsibility to review and maintain their WHOIS data. If you feel that the WHOIS information on a domain is incorrect or outdated please contact the domain's registrar to request a record update. If Go Daddy is the registrar, please let us know and we will contact the registrant to resolve the issue immediately.

Please let us know if we can help you in any other way. You may also wish to read through some of the frequently asked questions on our Support Forum:

Sort of an unrelated question...

Would my forwarding account or hosting account be subject to the following shutdown situation that affected a client of GKG.net

Apparently at fault is a single incorrect phone number on the "Registrant" record. Of three methods of contact for each of four contact positions on the domain, GKG.net choose to disable the domain because of a single piece of incorrect information, just one of five distinct units of contact information. GKG.net made no apparent attempt to use any of the other (all valid) contacts to alert us before taking the drastic action they did. I'm very disappointed in GKG.net and this policy.

Furthermore, once a domain is locked for invalid information, it (or any other domains owned) may not be modified by the owner. An absurd practice.

THIS SITE IS CURRENTLY DOWN due to GKG action. www.freerepublic.com

The Yahoo group name apparently changes sometime in the last year or two. I had an old link to http://clubs.yahoo.com/clubs/freerepublic which fails - yahoo doesn't have any group named freerepublic. But off the secondary freerepublic backup of http://www.anycities.com/mcgruff/wwwboard/ I found that the current Yahoo group backup is at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/freerepublic2. And from that I got the ipaddress for the real Free Republic, here.

It should be OK as long as someone links directly to the website using the IP numbers. I don't think that was true earlier -- I could be wrong -- but now entering http://209.157.64.200 in the address window should get them here.

I'm not going to pretend that I have to be right, though.

That is insane. I guess they're paranoid about websites getting hijacked.

The last I checked, ICANN is not the registar of record for FR (GKG is); yet that is where the complaint went. ICANN then went to GKG to order cancellation proceedings, and GKG allegedly used a single point of contact (one of the e-mail addresses) two times before shutting FR down (note; no record of GKG's mail appears to exist in that mailbox). Smells like a railroad job.

That'll work, however if you are in the habit of manually logging into FR everytime you come to the site (I.e. no cookies), you won't be able to just typing in the IP address. Updating the host file on your PC is the only way around this.
