FR DNS problems...

DNS lookups failing for FR here - no such host. Apparently I'm not the only one, judging from a glance at the Yahoo FR board. Dunno if it's my ISP (Verizon) or what, but I had to manually edit the hosts file to get here. Presumably, if you can post, you're not having this problem, but there are more than a few people who can't post right now because of it...

I'm having trouble not putting my tinfoil hat on, too. It seems very odd that a registrar would choose to lose monthly income so quickly rather than make a phone call, or send an email to any one of the 5 contact names they had.

I took out the hosts entry and flushed the DNS cache just now - no dice, still not working here in VA.

FR is down to 1/30 of its usual attendance. While that reduces bandwidth problems, it also shows that a lot of users don't want to or don't know how to mess with their HOSTS file.

Apparently at fault is a single incorrect phone number on the "Registrant" record. It seems to me that these things happen. Didn't CNN or some major site temporarily lose their email this way? Is this based on a law, or is it just the customer be damned?

Heh! And we're stuck with the second-string posters.
The ones who are smart enough to figure out other ways to get in. ;)

I tried doing things with the HOSTS file. Nothing worked. I did find a way to read FR though.

The domain is registered until September 2006. There is no reason to call on it in March 2004. THe mistake relating to one piece of contact information is a bogus excuse. This was deliberate action by somebody.

I haven't messed with my hosts file...
I just type in the IP address 209.157.64.200 in my address bar.
Piece of cake for us nerds.

I don't understand how these dns things work, but I assume that each isp has to get updated again somehow. Hopefully things will be normal for you again soon.

The companies where Freepers are employed. LOL. that was my first thought this morning, until I realized I'm IT. Then I coundn't remember my password for Yahoo.
Since the internet gods seemed determined to silence FR, I'm making two suggestions.
First, politely ask affiliated sites to have a back door link to FR on their home page, using the current IP address.
Second, change all the absolute links that are internal to FR to relative links, so once you get here using the IP, you can log on.

This was deliberate action by somebody. I agree. This sort of thing does not "just happen" unless someone makes it happen. I'd be looking for a new ISP.
