When Lehman read some of Clarke's previous statement, did he include the statement in which he said that by the end of the summer the Bush Admin. had increased money for covert action five-fold?I believe it was Thompson, who in his point by point questioning asked about this. Clarke replied it wasn't appropriated immediately, and Thompson pointed out that Congress appropriates.

Yes, this damages Clarke, but I think that isn't an important enough issue to go across this murky line. There is no issue more important than national security. My life, my relatives' lives, my family's lives are the most important thing in the world.
If Clarke's claim about national security are well-founded, I want to know and I have the right to know.
If Clarke is lying about national security, I have the right to know also.

Clarke must have a VERY guilty conscious. First he apologizes to the relatives. He has been in nothing but a CYA mode all day. He come out with his book to point the finger in other direction..Nothing was his fault.....He has/had all the answers.

You're right IF the "off the record" status was on behalf of Clarke personally, such as, for example, if he was whistle-blowing against the administration.
However, the "off the record" status was Clarke doing this for the White House. The background status was because of the White House and the White House can release the "background" status.

Birnbaum says he doesn't know the facts and can't really comment.
Condi will be on H&C tonight in a one-on-one with Sean...opposite Clarke on LKL.

Shep just said that Jim Angle will be on in a little bit - to talk about Fox and the "background" briefings..
To: hobson
The thought that these hearings will be recorded as part of history is an embarassment.

This has got to be the most sickening man I have ever seen...think he even beats Clinton. Can you imagine working with this guy??????? Day in and day out being around him?????He knows everything. A virtual Einstein. I hope hope he puts that sharp mind to work on electromagnetic theory. He could resolve the issues surrounding wave/particle duality in microseconds ... no, nanoseconds.
To: PISANO
When he said he told the FBI not to let BL's family out of the country........is that in writing somewhere or is he embellishing to sell his book?

Shep Smith just said they will speak with Jim Angle shortly about the charge of unethical.
I need to leave for a bit. Please somebody watch Fox to see if this comes up and let us know what they say.

Don't they understand that the press is suppose to tell the truth, not make up stuff?Ah, Howlin, that's the precise misconception almost everyone in the general public holds about the media. No, they are not supposed to do anything other than make a profit for their shareholders, just like any other corporation. However, unlike other corporations, which can be sued for defective products or services, our media is protected by some of the weakest libel and slander laws in the world thanks to overly liberal court interpretations of the free press clause of the First Amendment.
But people in the media are not superhumans unflawed by the human failings to which the rest of us are subject. They are self-appointed chroniclers of the passing American parade who operate virtually free of any constraints on their behavior. It may be a cliche, but it is also true that absolute power corrupts absolutely. Our so-called mainstream media is rotten with corruption, as the Viacom, to CBS News, to 60 Minutes, to whoever arranged the book deal (bribe) for Clarke, to the rest of the mainstream media treating Clarke as a hero demonstrates.
