My family lives in a bubble. My husband and I may know some gay or transgendered people, but my children have never met them. They don't have any friends who's parents are gay either. We just don't go out of our way to seek them out. I guess I should take my kids down to the local night spots asap, so they can be more naturally curious about these things.

Dang...our family lives in the exact same bubble.

My 6 year old son (who knows more about our government than most high school seniors) happened to see a "Rock the Vote" ad today--on Nickelodean, a channel we'll NEVER watch again. A young man was giving a little monologue about how "Our government sent my brother to war in Iraq but never asked him if he supports the war...our government tells us who we can and can't marry without asking us," yadda yadda. My son asked me--no kidding--"Did George H. W. Bush make you marry dad?" (Bush Sr. was president when we married.) I told him the commercial was nothing but lies and that in America a man can marry any woman he wants--if she wants to marry him, and that a woman can marry any man she wants--if he wants to marry her.

To my dismay he followed up with "Can I marry Christa? She likes Lord of the Rings, too."
