Dear Colleagues: Today the Claremont Police Department issued a news release concerning progress toward solving the recent crime involving a visiting professor at Claremont McKenna College-a crime of vandalism and theft that was deemed a hate crime. I wrote to you regarding this situation last week. In its news release, the Claremont Police Department reported that:
The Claremont Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have completed their investigation into the alleged hate crime on the Claremont McKenna College campus. During the course of the investigation, two eye witnesses came forward who positively identified the victim as vandalizing her own vehicle. Additionally, interviews with the alleged victim revealed inconsistencies in her statements regarding the incident.
Based on this information as well as other information revealed during the investigation, the Claremont Police Department will present its findings to the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office for review.
While we are pleased that progress is being made in the investigation, it is important for all of us to let law enforcement agencies-the FBI as well as the Claremont Police Department-continue their work, and for the judicial system, rather than the court of public opinion, to run its full course.
Whatever the ultimate outcome, I remain heartened with the outpouring of support we saw last week on our campus and throughout the Claremont Colleges for the values of inclusiveness, tolerance, and diversity. As a university, we are committed to taking concrete steps to make CGU a place where all people feel welcome and included, regardless of their race, gender, culture, religion, sexual orientation, or nationality. I look forward to reporting to you on our progress. As always, I welcome your comments on how we can build a better community.
Steadman Upham, President

Although I've seen these kinds of things first hand, I would have believed the professor too.

You may think that this is funny, but just wait until someone defaces your car. It isn't so funny then.
I know from personal experience, It's not just embarrassing and humiliating, it's degrading and demoralizing.
I still have nightmares about the afternoon I left the grocery store, my hands full of grocery bags, walking to my car, thinking about the beautiful supper I was going to make that night.
When I saw what had been done to my car my entire life just evaporated out of me. You can't possibly imagine the horror I experienced upon seeing that someone had taken their finger and scrawled upon the back window of my car "WASH ME."

Hmm -- I don't think diversity on campus includes the police. They tend to be so narrow-minded about crime, you know.

It's even worse when they just write "Dust." They leave us no choice but to wash our cars -- it's unspeakable, is what it is.

Wow--I get a reply from the famous Congressman Billybob!
Actually, Steadman Upman is at a different university. There are five undergraduate colleges, of which Claremont McKenna is the one where the visiting professor teaches at. Steadman Upman is professor of Claremont Graduate University, which is connected to the five colleges, but is a separate institution. Steadman Upman is actually a decent fellow--it is the intellectual climate everywhere that is the problem.

Please use the published headline only. Thank you.

set fire to an oversized cross used in an art projectThis surprises me, that this action was condemned. "Crucifix in urine" is high art, but the line is drawn at burning crosses? Oh yeah-- the Klan thing...

Hate crimes have been elevated above and beyond anything resembling equality in the doling out of punishment.
Not once have I ever heard of a minority being charged with one and those in the majority that are convicted of one have an entire new set of punishments to face. This being the case, falsified hate crimes are aimed not at an individual, but an entire race or creed or ethnicity or sexual persuasion and should have an equally severe impact with reguard to punishment.
Tarred, feathered and busting big rocks into small rocks for the next 200 years sounds good. (Plus 50 years probation following that)

I apologize. This is only the second time I have posted a thread and only the first time I have had a reaction from people. I was not sure of the protocol. What I should have written is "Update about Hate Crime from President Upham." Is that right?
Also, how would I post something to breaking news, if I needed to sometime?

....As a university, we are committed to taking concrete steps to make CGU a place where all people feel welcome and included, regardless of their race, gender, culture, religion, sexual orientation, or nationality. What a liar! I live in Claremont. The Claremont colleges are a snakepit of liberalism and you are definitely not made to "feel welcome" if you are a conservative, Republican or a Christian. In fact, you have to be a leftist liberal to fit in.
I know this story is about the whacko liberal professor but I had to comment on this liars lies.

The problem with the headline as it is now is that it doesn't signal to the reader the import of the story - that a professor falsified her own "hate crime" against herself! Couldn't words to that effect be inserted, in parentheses, after the headline????
To: Lancey Howard; Congressman Billybob
She ain't that "diverse". She's a white Catholic in the process of converting to Judaism.

Also, how would I post something to breaking news, if I needed to sometime? It's on the Topics list on the posting form, along with other News categories. Just select it.

What you do is use the REAL title (so that the search engine will pick it up and halt multiple postings of the same article) but ad a parenthetical to add you own thougths or to clarify a misleading or STUPID headline)
Something like this:
Update about Hate Crime from President Upham. ("Victim" vandalizes OWN car!)

IS IT POSSIBLE TO CHANGE IT AS YOU SUGGEST?

Thanks--that is what I will do next time!

where she spoke about the need for tolerance and racial harmony at the colleges, to find her tires slashed, windows broken and $1,700 worth of property stolen Any one know what would happen if I falsely claimed to have $1,700 of property stolen?
I wonder if she's already filed the claim to the insurance company?
