WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This week's deadly train bombings in Spain will not lead to a rise in the U.S. color-coded terror threat alert system, a Department of Homeland Security spokesman said Friday.

"Based on the current intelligence, we have no specific indicators that terrorist groups are considering such an attack in the U.S. in the near term," said department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse.

Also there was a memo to various National Park Officials indicating that their services must be cut.

That's an irresponsible story that never should have been printed. It's a terrorist's dream story and may be contributory to problems later down the line thanks to Salon news.

If the deaths of one or both are a "go" signal, then laying them out for the cameras would be like letting al-Jazeera play a full-length audiotape, Koranic quotes and all.

Why make their job any easier?

Maybe we got one or both of them in Iran on 1/20/04?
Maybe we got them today?
Maybe they'll escape like they did in Tora Bora.
Maybe they'll follow Hitler and escape to Argentina.

Maybe we'll show a dead body double but really have him/them in custody.

Maybe we'll show a live body double, but all that is really left of them are some teeth, a tuft of hair, and a piece of a finger.

If there are "brigades of death" ready to open the "doors of jihad", then no signal means no simultaneity.

If the fuse has been lit, then cut the wire. Multiple attacks could go in sequence, but not in series. And if in sequence, then you can react once the dominoes start falling.

If 9/11 had been spread out over 8 hours instead of 2 hours, we could have gotten the rest of the planes on the ground after the first tower was hit.

No idea if death or capture is a signal, but it seems apparent that their communications (by video and audiotape)have been used as signals since 9/11. So the sudden loss of the source(s) of the signals may have great significance. (Maybe these HVTs are great big "boobytraps")

Uday, Qusay, and Saddam were different. Clarity was the answer for that problem (regime remnants and jihadis in Iraq), not for this problem (terror cells in in America and allied countries)

So how do you defuse a bomb? (Or if you can't, limit the casualties?) Evacuate and seal off the area as best you can (information and communication, not people), and then cut the wire.

As in much of life, timing is everything.

Make them guess.

And if that becomes impossible, then at least control the timing so you are ready. (If you couldn't go back in time to 9/11 and spread the planes out over the day by disrupting the flights, if you understood the timing or signal to start, you might be able get fighter planes in the air ready to at least try to shoot some of them down - -if you control the clock.)

If you knew they would board on 223, you could even stop the flight.
