Krispy Kreme planning a low-sugar alternative

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Hot. Now. Healthy?

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, long known for its high-calorie treats, says it plans to offer a low-sugar doughnut.

The company's communications director, Amy Hughes, said Krispy Kreme hopes to use the new offering to attract dieters and diabetics to the company's stores.

Just one of Krispy Kreme's Hot Original Glazed doughnuts has 200 calories. More than half those calories come from fat, which gives the fried doughnut texture and flavor.

Each doughnut has 12 grams of fat and 10 grams of sugar. Hughes did not immediately return a phone call Thursday asking how much fat and sugar would be in the new doughnut, or when it would be offered.

A student at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine said that while a low-sugar doughnut is a good idea, he doubted he would give up on the original glazed variety.

"As for me, I'll die eating the fattening doughnuts," Clint Beaver said.

One of his med-school friends, Nathan Painter, found the whole idea of a low-calorie doughnut strange. "It just seems odd they're trying to be healthy," he said.

Still, he said, he would give one a try.

The idea of offering a low-sugar doughnut isn't new for Krispy Kreme.

"We've been looking at this for some time," Hughes said.

Splenda is very good. I can't tell the difference either. I use it on my Cheerios, and coffee, and then I have a large bag of it for baking. I used to be a big Pepsi drinker, but since being diagnosed, I've discovered that Diet Pepsi Vanilla, Diet Cherry 7-Up and Diet A & W Root Beer and Creme Soda are about the best non-sugar softdrinks. Swiss Miss also makes hot chocolate mix with Splenda.

Mass,

I was diagnosed with Type II last December. The really bad thing is that my nutritionist is right next to a Krispy Kreme store!

On an aside note, diet and exercise have done wonders for me so far.

Good news. I'm going need to buy them by the ton to get through this campaign season!
