They minimize their casualties and usually call ahead to evacuate.

Didn't I read somewhere in one of these threads that they have killed 850 people in the last few decades??

"The explosive used in yesterday's blasts was titadine, a compressed dynamite that Eta has used in the past. More explosives were found in the possession of an alleged Eta member, who was said to have intended to put them aboard a train."

"Langue D'Oc or language of Oc (Occitan). Am I right that they would be connected in some way to Basque heritage, then?"

Sorry, no connection..

Seems Lanque D'Oc has Latin source with Gallic influence..

No insults intended here, but I always wondered if the Basques may carry remnants of Neanderthal man genes...
High preponderance of -Rh would go a long way toward explaining the frailty of intermixing with Cro-Magnon genes.

Adding to fears that it may have been al-Qaeda, Madrid was struck exactly two and a half years, or 911 days, after the attacks in New York and Washington.

This morning, CBS News is reporting: 'it's unclear who's to blame' for the Madrid train bombings. God forbid that we offend our peaceloving Islamic pals who've even left a note claiming responsibility with a few more explosives! The spin goes on.

I thought Torrejon, Zaragoza, and Moron closed down in the late 80s/90s. Almost sure of it. (I grew up playing baseball at Torrejon.)

I was Navy, and was in Rota 81-90.

Zaragoza apparently closed in 1991.

Moron remains active with much higher manning now than in the eighties. Torrejon was used during Desert Storm/Desert Shield. Torrejon was always a political hot potato because of its nearness to Madrid.

I found the following:

Air Force Units deployed as part of Operation Desert Shield/Storm

401st Tactical Fighter Wing - F-16s Torrejon AFB, Spain

September 26, 2003

In 1988, there were 12,000 U.S. troops stationed at four major bases in Spain and several smaller installations scattered throughout the country, according to the U.S. Library of Congress.

Today, the Pentagon has forces in Rota, north of Cadiz, and at Morón Air Base, southeast of Seville. More than 3,000 active-duty military personnel are stationed at the bases, and between 6,000 and 8,000 Americans live in the region.

Since January 2000, Morón's mission has matured to make the base a critical link in supporting the rotation of Aerospace Expeditionary Forces (AEF) -- deployed in EUCOM and CENTCOM Areas of Responsibilities. Tanker Task Forces (KC-135 and KC-10), Fighter Units from the Air Force and Marine Corps, and airlifters (C-141, C-17 and C-5s) use Morón as a staging base for AEF operations. The base also frequently welcomes rotating US Army personnel. Morón staffing swells during these operations with temporary duty personnel (known as Expeditionary Combat Support) supplementing the contract, civilian and active-duty personnel. In the past, the temporary duty slots were filled by active-duty personnel. However now the slots are almost entirely with Air Reserve Component personnel, making Morón one of the largest users of ARC personnel in Europe. In conjunction with efforts and guidance from 31 FW, 16th AF, HQ USAFE and HQ AMC, Morón has forged a lasting partnership with the Air Reserve Command, located at Warner-Robins AFB, Georgia.

Thousands join anti-war marches in Spain

Tens of thousands of protesters denouncing the United States-led war in Iraq today marched to Spanish military bases used by the US to refuel planes and help care for wounded soldiers.

At least 25,000 people holding banners reading “No to War”, “Not in Our Name”, or simply “Peace”, marched to the edge of the Rota Naval and Air Base in southwest Spain amid tight security.

Organisers of the protest put the number of marchers at 60,000.

Thousands more marched to military bases in Moron, Zaragoza and Albacete and Torrejon.
