I can't recall which president/famous leader was involved in this exchange.
A woman said to him "Sir..you smell" to which he replied "No madam. You smell. I stink."
I just hate it when people use the verb "smell" instead of the proper intransitive verb "stink".....:)

It wasn't a President or leader. It was Samuel Johnson, the malodorous literary giant who "wrote" the first dictionary.

A woman said to him "Sir..you smell" to which he replied "No madam. You smell. I stink." I thought it was "You, sir, are drunk," and then Winston Churchhill said "But tomorrow I shall be sober and you, Madam, will still be ugly."

It was Dr. Samuel Johnson, an 18th century British dictionary editor.
