Spirit Status for sol 65 Roving Toward the Rim posted Mar. 10, 12 pm PST
Spirit spent sol 65, which ended at 12:29 a.m. PST on March 10, analyzing soil targets with the alpha particle x-ray spectrometer, Moessbauer spectrometer and microscopic imager before stowing its arm, doing some remote sensing of the trench dubbed Serendipity Trench," and then finally setting off for the longest directed drive to date. That drive was 27 meters (88.6 feet) toward the edge of Bonneville" crater.
Spirit then attempted to use auto navigation to reach a target that was an additional 6 meters (19.7 feet) away. Sensitive obstacle avoidance software prevented Spirit from reaching the destination, and like yestersol, the rover completed several drives forward and back. Those drives resulted in a final odometer reading of 40.7 meters (133.5 feet) for the day, even though the total straight-line distance traveled was 30 meters (98.4 feet).
The 30-meter (98.4 feet) drive put Spirit close enough to Bonneville's" edge to take images with the navigation cameras that reveal the opposite rim of the crater.
On sol 66, which ends at 1:09 a.m. PST on March 11, 2004, Spirit will drive up to the summit of the rim and show us what's inside with a 180-degree navigation camera panorama.

Don't suppose you have the 3-D glasses to go along with them do you? They're giving me a headache trying to look at them without the glasses.

Is that what the bright object is on the far side of the crater?

If you have a music store near you that sells pro audio/recording equipment/guitars, etc [for musicians that is, not records], buy a couple gels for PAR38 light cans, one red and one blue/green. Red on left, blue over right eye :)

Seems to me we should get the 3-D glasses when we get our FR decoder rings.

Maybe someone's already posted this but I haven't seen it. This outfit says it'll send you sample 3-D glasses for free (but you have to put your email addy on their mailing list). Anyhow, I'm ordering some today and maybe some of you with businesses may want to try an order for a sales promotion ad:

I was gone for a few days and missed the big announcement NASA was going to make on Tuesday.
I really haven't seen anything in the news.
What was the big announcement??? Was it just a rehash information on water that we already had learned?

Water was always suspect but never definitively confirmed. We knew there was water ice but not liquid water.
The conference confirmed that the rocks opportunity was analyzing was unmistakably altered by liquid water.

Private detectives are at work on Mars. This is also possible in general astronomy where there is more data arriving every day than can possibly be analyzed. Amateurs can access the data and do their own sleuthing. No limits exist except some data is proprietary for specified periods of time--usually one year.

Why don't you sell some glasses so we can see this?

Re #10: What color would you recommend with red, blue or cyan? To my eyes your images appear more cyan than blue.

You can get 3D glasses at department stores, supermarkets etc. I find that 3 dimensions works much better than 2 for containing liquids and small solid objects (pebbles, golf balls, brains removed from liberals etc).

The Democrat Space Agency finally got one of their rovers to land on Mars after hundreds of attempts. All paid for by other people. The DSA Rover is named "Spoiled Brat" an spent today eating dirt and building sand castles which he then proceeded to stomp.
The opposition said the mission was a "waste" and proposed sending millions more Democrats to Mars.
