DEER VALLEY-School officials suspended a freshman girl for the remainder of the school year after she admitted "taking a hit" from a marijuana pipe on the way to school. The girl and her parents challenged the suspension, but the Deer Valley school board this week upheld the punishment.

The girl's parents protested, to no avail, that it should be their role to discipline their child for off-campus actions.

Foolish peons. Don't they know it takes a village?

I believe most school districts have this rule.

So why don't parents wake up and read the disciplinary code, which is usually as thick as a telephone book.

If you read the disciplinary code over, and find that it's not to your liking and you can't live with it, find another educational venue for your kid. It's as simple as that.

It's a felony to use pot in Maricopa County. She's getting off easy.

What is suspending her from school for the rest of the year going to accomplish? If anything, she will probably find other non-productive things to do since she's going to have all the free time in the world now. In my opinion, schools know NOTHING about raising or disciplining kids. The school should leave the disciplining to the parents.

Why did this person 'admit' to doing something?
Big mistake.

Further proof that you should never tell the truth to any government official. I was brought up to always tell the truth and in my youth, most minor digressions were given a slap on the wrist and detention after fessing up. In light of today's world my children will be raised a little differently. New marching orders are to deny everything till your blue in the face, no narratives, call me, and then shut the he** up. If they want to question you further tell them you'd like to but my father won't allow it. Modern times dictate that you treat any form of governemnt intervention involving your family the same as you would an interrogation by the police. Nothing good will come of it. Only after I am appraised of the situation will truth and punishment become an issue. Remember honest George Washington chopping down the cherry tree? Today he would probably ditch the axe and lie to high heaven or face suspension and a psych evaluation.

Loserdopian Response: Get the evil government out of our students lives.

Not owning any students. but yes, government is evil, albeit occasionaly necessary.

The third, and most cogent reason for restricting the interference of government, is the great evil of adding unnecessarily to its power. J S Mill On Liberty

Stories like this make homeschooling a more attractive option, especially if a parent knows his kid won't do well in the local public school -- perhaps because he's a smartass who talks back and constantly challenges his teachers or because, even if his kid is a good kid, he can get into a load of trouble for saying the wrong thing at the wrong time or even having the temerity to defend himself if he's set upon by a bunch of thugs in school or on the way to or from school.

It's so easy today for a good kid to get in trouble (and perhaps even get a criminal record) while attending public schools, and that's because public school officials don't feel they have to exercise judgment anymore under "zero-tolerance, zero-brain" policies." In fact, they are happy enough not to exercise judgment. It makes it so easy for them to get through their day, and they still get the big bucks.

We've all heard the horror stories about kids who have a butter knife in their car or in their lunchbox, and the school goon squad swoops down on them and they wind up in an "alternative" school.

However, having said that, I don't have much sympathy for the girl in this article or her parents. It's illegal to smoke marijuana anywhere at anytime, and the school apparently went along with the "10 days "or more" suspension rule -- the "or more" part being that she's now going to the local thug school.

Yeah, look at poor Martha. She should have kept her mouth shut and refuse to meet with the Feds. She should have let them manufacture a case against her without her help.

"Being on long-term suspension has kept me from the thing I love, track," she said. "It was a stupid decision and it will never happen again."

Oh well in that case we can't suspend her. She might miss out on something really important to her./sarcasm

I have a suggestion, for these troubled people.
Print up flyers, and post on the internet, descriptions
of the cars owned by the school board.
Give a flyer, and a can of spray paint, to every
teenager in town.

The school should leave the disciplining to the parents.

Boy, wouldn't that be nice. In 11 years of teaching I could count on one hand the number of times I have seen a parent discipline a child for misbehavior at school.

So then... Since she won't be allowed in school, I suppose that she now has plenty of spare time to go out, get her legs up, and pop out a few kids for welfare to pay for.

What would we do without the War on Drugs to protect us? I shudder to even think about it!

"What is suspending her from school for the rest of the year going to accomplish?"

Judging from her plea's to the school board...I suspect she won't make the same mistake twice.

"In my opinion, schools know NOTHING about raising or disciplining kids. The school should leave the disciplining to the parents."

Tell that to the thousands of teacher's who have to deal with kids who's parents couldn't give a crap what they do. The "not my child" attitude is rampant.....I'm not a teacher but I am a parent and I have seen these types of parents far too often.
