I would also point out that the 1920's were considered boom years in the USA. That boom coincided with protectionist tariffs. Of course until Clinton the uSA maintained protectionist tariffs with a goal of free Trade with many nations. Of course until Clinton US traiffs were the bargaining chip to open up foreign markets to US goods. Nafta is not the issue but the current trade envirornment is the issue. Ryan should lay teh blame where it belongs on the Democrats who in teh name of Free trade enacted an anti-investment trade policy for the uSA.

NAFTA, FTAA, Summit of the Americas and the Organization of American states are all treaties and foreign relations issues that are set to come down very hard on working Americans and our pocketbooks.
To: harpseal
The effects of teh Smoot Hawley tariff were relatively minor one way or the other and it actually had some positive effects. You are certainly welcome to have your little version of history. I'm not one who goes around pretending to be an expert. If you want to mock Jack Ryan, who went to Dartmouth and HBS and is 70 million dollars richer from practicing economics, and other folks who know what they're talking about, in favor of Pat Buchanan, or yourself -- well, forgive me if I don't consider you an authority.
The crowning folly of the Hoover administration was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, passed in June 1930. It came on top of the Fordney-McCumber Tariff of 1922, which had already put American agriculture in a tailspin during the preceding decade. The most protectionist legislation in U. S. history, Smoot-Hawley virtually closed the borders to foreign goods and ignited a vicious international trade war.

I am just so tired of the same old "Smoot-Hawley" argument being hauled out time and time again. It is wrong, and it needs to be done away with forever. It's the economic equivalent of claiming the world is flat, it's just utter nonsense. Just get used to it . . . imagine how a "free-trader" feels whenever somebody trots-out that Karl Marx quote.

Let's not let Johnny have all the fun!
Ryan is not the best candidate for our Conservative position. He is a moderate vote getter. At minimum, we should make sure he gets such a close margin of victory to the real Conservative in this race, that he acknowledges our presence, our patience, our ability to get votes, our more powerful vision. He should hear us.
Vote Rauschenberger! (geez - will the spellchecker catch that one?)

Let's not let Johnny have all the fun! Ha! You think arguing with Pat Buchanan is fun????!!!
Rauschie is finally about to break into double digits, but don't insult peoples' intelligence by saying Jack Ryan isn't conservative.

I just can't get around Jack Ryan divorcing Jeri aka Seven on Nine; something has to be wrong with him.

Sorry Redwing9, I cannot vote for someone who voted in to have Illinois Citizens to pay for tuition for Illegal Aliens!
And Rauschenberger helped pass the bill that is now Law!
Steve says: Show me your wallet! Let's Celebrate Criminal Activity! And while we are at it we will give these Criminals a break in tuition for their kids!

Vote Rauschenberger! (geez - will the spellchecker catch that one?) Rauschy be a rockin' an' a rollin' now!
There is no way any poll can measure the grassroots groundswell that is taking place for Rauschy. I heard one insider poll had Ryan losing two points per day beginning last Saturday. My guess (hope that is) is that Borling will drop a nuke that will take out both him and Jack!O.
Oh, and CL, make note: while you may not like one particular vote that Rauschy cast, rememeber that Obie has NEVER ONCE VOTED FOR OR AGAINST ANYTHING EVER IN HIS ENTIRE LIFE. He is free to make up any position he feels will play to whatever audience he targets. In 02 it was pro-lifers he characterized as Christian Taliban -- this year he gets his kicks flying over Soldier Field targeting illegal aliens. Should we tattoo their matricula numbers on their wrists before loading them into cattle cars -- only the Obie knows.

OH Come on TRG. So go ahead and defend a vote to pay for Illegal aliens Tuition!!
The only bone that folks keep throwing around to bash Jim Oberweis with is that he made a "Taliban statement" In a Illinois Leader Interview he explained his "Media Gone Wild" Statement......
IL: I have some questions that have been circulating, and ones to which you deserve the opportunity to respond. It goes back to this comment, the so-called Taliban comment that suggested prolifers were like the Taliban on a radio show. Did you say this?
OBERWEIS: Absolutely false. That is not what happened. That is what I was referring to earlier, when I said I started with the statement, I am prolife . . . and mentioned the Taliban as my concern about government expressing too large of a role in our lives. So, you know, Ive answered that a dozen times, or more than that.
IL: So youre saying it was pulled out of context, at a very volatile time, when it would have been interpreted as the ultimate insult. . .
OBERWEIS: I will tell you that the chain of events was started when the quote was sent to the New York Catholic League. They believed what they were told - which was not accurate. When I explained what had happened, they sent a letter back saying that they found it to be very open and forthright, characteristics that would go a long way to the U.S. Senate. Of course, those comments got printed on page 16 of the paper.
IL: Are you Catholic?
OBERWEIS: Yes.
Hey TRG, When did you start to care about pro-lifers? Did I miss some thing? A Conversion maybe?
The SPIN stops Here! :-)
So HOW much are we betting??

Rauschie is finally about to break into double digits, but don't insult peoples' intelligence by saying Jack Ryan isn't conservative. I did not say that 'Rauschie' had any digits. I did not refer to his polling results. Instead what I said was I hoped he would get enough support to show that Mr. Ryan, the one getting all the moderate votes, that there is a substantial Conservative vote to be dealt with.
I never said that Ryan was NOT a Conservative. I merely pointed out that he will get elected by appealing to the middle-of-the-road Republicans - only. He will get some segment of the Conservative vote, but his 30% win will not be indicative of solid Conservative backing.
Good night!

1. He is a moderate vote getter.
2. I never said that Ryan was NOT a Conservative.
3. But I would suggest not voting for Mr. Moderate, Ryan Schizophrenic much?
I can see how you COULD have meant "getter of moderate votes" in the first statement -- maybe. But I would hope that we ALWAYS run conservatives who can get moderate votes. Otherwise we'll lose every time. But of course then you blew it in the next post with the "Mr. Moderate" crack and your insistence he isn't a real conservative. Get a grip!
I did not say that 'Rauschie' had any digits.
No, I did.

It's been nice to hear conservative commercials on the radio from the Republican candidates. After the last election, I was wondering if we would ever hear a conservative make his views known.

NAFTA, FTAA, Summit of the Americas and the Organization of American states are all treaties and foreign relations issues that are set to come down very hard on working Americans and our pocketbooks. Which is exactly why Jim Oberweis should be the guy representing IL. I don't trust Ryan or Rauschenberger on the critical issues of trade and immigration. I mean what can one say about Ryan-the RNC anointed one? Here's a guy that is too afraid, too timid to show up to the debates because he might get ruffed up a bit. What does that say about his courage and convictions? Or Rauschenberger who likes the idea of forcing IL taxpayers to pay for the college tuition of Illegal Aliens while out of state AMERICAN CITIZENS have to pay through the nose?
We need a leader with convictions to represent IL (been a helluva long time on that), not another wimp that will twist with wherever the Beltway Wind is blowing. Enough is enough with the professional politicians.

OH Come on TRG. So go ahead and defend a vote to pay for Illegal aliens Tuition!! I won't try to defend Rauschy's vote on that, and there's probably several other votes he's cast that I don't agree with -- maybe even 10 or 20. But let's just assume the number of his votes I disagree with is 50. He's cast over 5000 roll call votes. That means I agree with him 99% of the time -- that's a pretty strong reason to vote for the guy.
What has Obie EVER voted for??? NADA!!!
It's real easy to spout off about whatever you want when you've never actually had to stand up and be counted on anything ever in your entire life.
Hey TRG, When did you start to care about pro-lifers? Did I miss some thing?
Question is, did you miss something. I've been pro-life since the day I was born (oopps I meant conceived) -- do I need to carry a pickled fetus around in a mason jar in search of converts in order to prove it, I don't think so.
A Conversion maybe?
I don't think so. I am still heterosexual, so far as I know ;^)
The SPIN stops Here! :-)
Wrong, the spin stops March 17. We can kiss and make up then, provided I haven't been converted.
So HOW much are we betting??
How's 'bout $20. Even money that Rauschy beats Obie. You pay me 2-1 if Rauschy beats Obie by more than 4 points. Does that work for you?
