Before Christ saved me in '73, I was really interested in Judas. Jesus Christ Superstar had something to do with that. There are all the common guesses, such as this movie makes.
But when you come down to it, that I can think of, the Gospels reflect none of it, nothing deep at all. There is the fact that he was a thief, and used to "lift" from the common money-box (John 12:5), in the context of his complaining about the woman "wasting" expensive perfume on Jesus. This points towards nothing other than strictly financial motives.
But the real answer is in Luke 22:3 and John 13:2, where we read that Satan motivated him to do what he did.
I'd say, in view of the silence of the Gospel narratives beyond this, don't look for depth or rationale where none exists.
Pretty sure I'm going to be busy, whenever this shows.
