The Gun Manufacturers Liability Bill just failed by a vote of 8-90. Now there are no worries about the AWB (for now!).

What was Schumer smoking? He said it was going to be a tie vote. Is he on the planet Bongo or was he just lieing to get some face time?

Why would they kill a clean bill? A clean bill is the one that the GOP wanted.
The bill that didn't pass was so objectionable that NEITHER side could stomach it. The senators also got the message that a vote for the overall bill was a vote for gun control and we DID NOT want anything to do with it.

Right now they just have the amendments votes tallied, perhaps in an hour the total vote will be up.

Were there any small privately owned airplanes in this?

I called Senator Craig's office to verify.
It was indeed DEFEATED.
I think it is VERY interesting that the press was yelling all day that the AWB extension PASSED in the Senate today, but didn't bother to say that it was an amendment to 1805. Now that 1805 has gone down in flames, they are not reporting it!

Unfortunately, you're absolutely right.
Some can't see the forest for the trees, perhaps?

I am only "celebrating" this mockery of a bill getting killed. I disagree that this is a huge travesty and I feel that there was no guarentee that Delay could strip everything out in conference.
Read the threads from earlier today. This AWB issues could have split pro-gun people away from Bush and that is bad in my book. Now it is not an issue, it is not something occupying our time and we can move on to another issue.
Do I see this as a huge vitory? Heck no. The Rats just controlled AGAIN what goes on in the Senate. Reclaiming the majority was not good enough. We need a super majority and certain Senators to grow a spine.

I just can't believe how we keep getting played in Congress. Do we not have any strategic thinkers at all? And what was the NRA smoking when they decided to praise Daschle before the bill was signed. My God, don't tip your hand til the chips are in the pot, people. Tommie took a free ride on this.

These last couple of days just show why Bill Frist is not fit to be majority leader. He can't keep his troops in line and because of it a badly needed bill is killed. What makes him think that he can be a good President if he can't keep 50 other Republicans together? He is worthless and every GOP Senator that authored or sponsered an amendment to this bill should be publically taken to task by Bush and the House. There is a total lack of leadership in the Senate.

(insert medium pitched southern accent here, tinged occasionally with a deep inflection to signify maturity) "Hi, I'm Johnny Edwards, and when I'm not promoting socialism with a Clinton-like smile on my face, I'm a U.S. Senator. Before I weasled my way into the U.S. Senate, I was an ambulance chasing trial lawyer, and I just want to
thank my fellow Democrats (and some of you RINOs) for loading up that gun liability bill with lots of poison pills!
(smile even bigger) You see, when my run for the Vice-Presidency is over, I'll be able to add to my 50-Million Dollar fortune by representing more clients in frivolous "wrongful death" lawsuits against gun manufacturers. I 'preciate it, fellow Senators, I really do."

Out here in Cali, our AWB won't sunset. Neither will ours here in NY state, though ours is, of course, less onerous.
I had hoped to pick up a "pre-ban" cheaply here in NY after the AWB sets, since most of the U.S. will be able to purchase new rifles with "assault weapons" features, but I have heard that the NY AWB might make even possession of a pre-ban "assault weapon" illegal. Apparently, there is some issue with the date of ownership of a pre-ban "assault weapon".
If anyone is in NY State, be very careful before you buy a pre-ban "assalut weapon". The issue of "pre-ban" legality is apparently one left up to the "interpretation" of the NY State Attorney General Elliot Spitzer. I'll give you one guess as to how that would be "interpreted".

It is not essential that Congress pass the liability bill itself. Basically, this bill will be preempting state common law - there is no federal law which allows suits against gunmakers. This is a state law matter and could be handled on a state level. Gunmakers have fared relatively well in these suits so far so there is no real reason to fear in the short term while we petition our state legislators.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know which, if any, states have passed gunmaker immunity legislation?
To: section9
"No worry about the AWB now!" Well, that's not exactly true. I fully expect the AWB extension to be tacked on to some spending bill or "criminal justice" bill, since it won't stand on it's own merits. So it's back to "eternal vigilance" and all that. Feinstein & company will be back; of that, we can be certain.
You have to give the statist left credit for one thing: they are incredibly tenacious.

GOP Senators have the floor for 21/2 hours now to explain all the rat lies about the war. They are quoting Kerry and Daschle a lot. At the end of the gun bill vote the Senator ( I forgot his name)offered the bill said he will bring back a clean bill this year, only a clean bill will pass.

S.1806 is still alive in the Senate. It is on the calander as #364 I think.
Still on the schedule according to the GPO. I think when it comes up on the schedule, it'll need to come up for consideration again. Considering what happened to its sister bill, that may not happen.
The House Bill passed without all this odeious crap.
