C-Span

The Gun Manufacturers Liability Bill just failed by a vote of 8-90. Now there are no worries about the AWB (for now!).

Because they didn't want the liability legislation to begin with. True enough. ....But they wanted the AWB exension badly.

Where is this "final count?"
To: NittanyLion
So, as of now, we have no protection from liability for gunmakers, and a renewal of the assault weapons bill. How do you conclude this?

Thanks for the correction folks. Posting from a cube is tough business... ;-)

So, is it time for dancing in the street and passing out sweets? No, because the firearms industry is still at the potential mercy of one liberal jury, or one liberal bench of judges that could find a gun manufacturer liable for tens of millions of dollars in damages for a gun crime committed with a legally manufactured and sold weapon.
Feinstein will try to get her AWB ban extension passed again, even if the House has stated it wants no part of it. The trick for Feinstein would be to find a pending Bill the Republicans are introducing that would be "germane" to the AWB.
I was actually more worried about Ted Kennedy's "cop killer bullet" amdt. than the AWB, since it would have started us down the road of outlawing rifle ammunition. Of course, the House would never pass it.
Neither party got what they wanted in these debates, and the AWB just took another step towards Sunsetting.

Looks like that was my mistake. Sorry 'bout that.

But why such a big margin 90-8.... A lot of pissed off gun owners must have flooded their senators with phone calls faxes and emails after they attached the "assault weapons" ban.

Once the Senate passes amendments to a Bill, there is no "clean Bill" on which to vote. Not quite correct. This same bill was introduced at least three different times as S 659, S 1805, and S1806.

Just a little knee-jerk libertarian cynicism, nothing to worry about.

Maybe they thought that the House had enough votes to strip the amendments from the liability bill in conference.
To: Blood of Tyrants
My point is that once an amendment has been agreed to, the possibility of someone standing up and saying "hey! remember the unamended bill!?! Let's return to it and pass it!" are virtually nil.
I realize that other incarnations of an amended bill can be introduced.

No, because the firearms industry is still at the potential mercy of one liberal jury, or one liberal bench of judges
Potentially, yes. But so far they(trial lawyers) have had no success.

The way bradycampaign.org is heralding this as a major victory makes me think they were more concerned about defeating the untouched liability law than about keeping the AWB. Or else they have bigger, nastier AWB plans coming soon.

While the voting results on S. 1805 have to be seen as a surprise, the real explanation lies in what would have occurred in the Conference Committee.
If anyone has insight into how such a committee operates, please post it here.
