"Demonstrate to me how an AR-15 would be more useful to me than the two weapons I mentioned. I do not think you can do that."

Well, it's a horrific example, but do you remember when Baruch Goldstein entered an Israeli mosque and with a semi-automatic Galil, killed almost 100 praying Muslims?

THAT is an example of the effectiveness of aimed, semi-auto fire.

RE:

"If I give you a list of guns and say YOU CAN'T OWN THESE.

Is that an Infringement?"

Probably most soccer moms wouldn't see it that way.

Until it got to a list of "Books you Can't Read", "People You Cannot Associate With", or "Religions you Can't Believe in" etc..

Even then, I wonder if they'd get it?

My letter today to W, FWIW:

Re: Assault Weapon Ban: NO

President Bush, I want you to be reelected this year and have worked for your election in 2000. I believe that you are a good man and the best choice to lead this country.

Please, take a stand now AGAINST the so-called 'Assault Weapon Ban' renewal. This ineffective and unconstitutional law MUST be allowed to sunset this year.

As an active Republican, I am hearing disturbing talk from formerly loyal Republicans in my district and on the internet. Many are saying that if you sign a renewal of the Assault Weapon Ban, they will stay home in protest and NOT VOTE this November.

As you know, this election may be close and you cannot afford to have thousands or millions of your core base refuse to turn out or refuse to volunteer in the campaign.

This issue is a key one for many, many Republican voters like myself. Please stay true to us and true to the Constitution on this one; let the AWB sunset, do not sign it. Thank you Sir.

How, precisely, is a ban on assault weapons a violation of the 2nd Amendment?

The ban (especially as Feinstein wants to rewrite it) deprives citizens of the very type of arms the 2nd was meant to protect...arms that provide effective defense and effective deterrence. Perhaps a better question would be "How, precisely, is a ban on assault weapons a violation of American ideals?".

Kerry and the gun banners keep saying "Hey, no one wants to mess with your right to hunt ducks". Imagine if we applied the same logic to other freedoms we take for granted?

Ban on cellphones: "Hey, no one wants to mess with your right to stay home and talk to Grandma."

Ban on motorcycles: "Hey, no one wants to mess with your right to drive your car to work."

Ban on fast food: "Hey, no one wants to mess with your right to eat healthful salads."

And going down this road, what's to prevent a ban on open display of faith? "Hey, no one wants to mess with your right to have Santa and the Easter Bunny." Of course the ACLU would probably ban Santa too, they're thorough.

All this whiny, milquetoast dumbing down of our basic rights is not just a violation of some amendment. It's more fundamental than that. We're either free Americans, or some degree of subjects, frogs-in-the-kettle wondering why it's so hot in here.

Lugar? Lugar? Lugar voted Yea???

He's been anti-2nd Amendment as long as I've followed him. Voted for 94 ban, gun show ban, and this. He's just very quiet about it.

I'm more than a little surprised that E. Dole didn't vote for it.

I'm REAL surprised her voting record was perfect on all of these gun bills, even the trigger locks.

Maybe it's been the phone calls.

By the way. This is not just about Bush. If this thing passes, I am done with ALL Republicans.

I can't agree with you on that one. Refusing to vote for a beltway jerk or a leadership guy is one thing, but there are a lot of good ones out there.

Without the Republicans, I wouldn't have had CCW in Michigan, nor a gun lawsuit ban here without an AWB attached.

That said, I refuse to vote for an individual who votes for this.

Bush gets your vote.

Not yet. The AWB issue's not done.

I'm hoping he can get my vote, thought.

1. It INFRINGES on freedom.
2. Semi automatics are used in the military. The 2nd amendment protects military small arms.

Federalist 46 is a good explanation.

No, he didn't. This might keep him from being burned in effigy (or worse), but this doesn't redeem him for all that he has done. Remember that he voted for the ban in the first place. Toomey still gets my vote because he didn't need to be threatened to vote the right way

At least you didn't go 0-6. My two jerks voted for all three bigtime bad bills. The AWB, gun show ban, and even the Kennedy centerfire ammo ban(which Kerry backed too).

Well earlier you were ready to give a defacto vote to Kerry and the prospect of Janet Reno II.

Maybe your "thoughts" shouldn't be so narrow minded, IMO.

Does anybody besides me get the feeling when it comes to gun control and politics, what we're seeing is this?

And Lenin and Stabenow are going to get a stone cole stunner. DAMN I wish they were up this year.

Well, if that antique is your idea of a hunting rifle, I'm pretty sorry for you. Doesn't look a thing like mine. I'll bet my groups at 200 yds. are a heckuva lot tighter, too.

You also mentioned – somewhat disparagingly, it seemed - a “group [that] wants to show off just how much they know about firearms and is quick to call those who know less names.” Looks like you may be a member of that group yourself.

;>)

Clip, magazine....nobody really cares. The two refer to mechanisms to hold rounds. Even the precise definition of "assault rifle" is a waste of time. Under the AWB, there is a definition that is used in that law. That definition is the only one that matters.

Actually, the “definition” in the AWB only "matters" if the ban was “made in pursuance” of the United States Constitution. If it was not, then it is the AWB “definition” that doesn’t matter.

Frankly, I'd rather have my old bolt-action deer rifle and stand off a couple hundred yards. If I have to be in close combat, I want my Mossberg 12-ga. in hand, unless I'm facing the military, which is unlikely to occur. I wouldn't trade either for an AR-15 or anything similar. Not ever.

Congratulations. In “the parlance of our times,” you would apparently ‘rather have your bolt-action sniper rifle, stand off a couple hundred yards,’ and kill people from a distance. If you had to be in ‘close combat,’ you would prefer your ‘street sweeper.’ Unless you were ‘facing the military,’ of course, ‘which is unlikely to occur’ - unless you belong to an unpopular religious group & live near Waco, Texas. And obviously you ‘wouldn't trade either for an AR-15 or anything similar’ – even though there are AR-15s (and similar ‘assault weapons’ ;>) that are probably capable of “a heckuva lot tighter” groups “at 200 yds” than is your “old bolt-action deer rifle.”

By the way, I suspect your .22 rimfire already qualifies as an “assault weapon” in some States. Extending the federal AWB not only encourages and validates such perverse State legislation, it also provides a foundation for future federal legislation banning your ‘sniper rifle’ and ‘street sweeper’ as well.

(By the way, the "antique" you referred to is no "antique:" it was manufactured after 1898. And there is no reason to suggest it could not out-shoot your "old bolt-action deer rifle" - British military and police forces used sniper rifles based on the No.4 action until fairly recently... ;>)

Well put, Unkie Jaques. That's really the whole point of the second amendment, isn't it -- to preserve our other rights and freedoms.

I have a mossberg loaded all the time, but find it painful to shoot alot when practicing, particularly the combat shells you want to use for defense - both double ought and slugs. Painful!

put some good handgrips on the thing front and back, get rid of the stock. try some bolt on iron sights. try some 100m shots... heck, try some sabots. you'll be impressed, and no bruises. (oh, btw, keep the front arm elbow locked, otherwise, you'll get a free nose job.)
