In its second full day in theaters, Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ held up remarkably well and grossed $14,781,316, dropping 44% from its opening day haul of $26,556,573. Take out the estimated $3M in preview grosses that were added to Wednesday's figure, and the decline stands at a surprisingly mild 37%. By comparison, Wednesday-to-Thursday drops for other recent high-profile event films bowing on Wednesdays include 51% for The Return of the King, 57% for Star Wars Episode I, 47% for The Two Towers, and 55% for The Matrix Revolutions.

To date, Passion has collected a stunning $41.3M going into the Friday-to-Sunday weekend period with tremendous strength. That puts it in the same company as The Phantom Menace, which launched with a Wednesday-Thursday take of $40.9M leading to a five-day bow of $105.7M. Also performing in similar fashion was The Two Towers which took in $40M in its first two days capturing $102M over its five-day opening frame. At its current pace, the Jesus tale may also reach the neighborhood of $100M over its Wednesday-to-Sunday debut frame.

The fact that is is getting under the skin of the hollywierd crowd is worth the price of admission.

I was going to go with a friend this weekend, but she said they were all sold out here in San Antonio. I also want to get my mother in MO 5 tickets for her birthday, so she can take some of her friends. After some of the criticism from Hollyweird, I may buy another 5 just to give away.

I suggested a boycott of DreamWorks productions (Jeffrey Katzenberg, David Geffen and Steven Spielberg) yesterday because they stated they would never work with Mel because of this movie. Freeper SouthMountainBilly was kind enough to make a list for us.

It will sell millions without extra footage. It doesn't need it and hearing Gibson's interview it sounds like he will not be puting any extra stuff in there.

As for cutting out certain things in the movie, I don't think he cut anything out of the movie under pressure. This was a PR game. He did not take away anything but added a few scenes.

Luk 8:4 And when many people were collected, and had come to him out of every city, he spoke by a parable:

Luk 8:5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.

Luk 8:6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered, because it lacked moisture.

Luk 8:7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.

Luk 8:8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bore fruit a hundred-fold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.

Luk 8:9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What doth this parable mean?

Luk 8:10 And he said, To you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.

Luk 8:11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.

Luk 8:12 Those by the way side, are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved.

Luk 8:13 They on the rock [are they], who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, who for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away.

Luk 8:14 And that which fell among thorns are they, who, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of [this] life, and bring no fruit to perfection.

Luk 8:15 But that on the good ground are they, who in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep [it], and bring forth fruit with patience.

Luk 8:16 No man, when he hath lighted a candle, covereth it with a vessel, or putteth [it] under a bed; but setteth [it] on a candlestick, that they who enter in may see the light.

Luk 8:17 For nothing is secret, that shall not be made manifest; neither [any thing] hid, that shall not be known, and come abroad.

I think those verses summarize they way this controversy over the movie has progressed. Some people just don't get it and in my review I said something to that effect. If you do not believe Jesus died for your sins you won't "get" this movie. Its amazing how accepting Jesus can change one's entire world view in such a short period of time.

In the interview with Oreilly he said there was a scene or two cut because of some outside pressure but they were supposedly scenes that were neither here nor there among the storyline but may have been considered anti-semetic

I have not seen the movie as of yet but i will this weekend.

Mr. Alder and I are going tomorrow (Sat.) with his church. My mum-in-law (Mother Adler) is going along with us. She is 80 and probably hasn't seen a movie in a theatre for a decade at least. I warned her strongly about the violence because she has NO IDEA how violent modern movies have gotten. She says she wants to go, anyway.

I am apprehensive about the violence, myself, but I want to go to support Mel Gibson, to renew my faith, and because I need to choose between the Catholic Church and the Missoui Synod Lutheran Church (Mr. Adler and Mother Adler's denomination). I am an Episcopalian but am very unhappy with recent events in my denomination. I have been dragging my feet about making the choice, and perhaps this film will galvanize my decision-making process.

I read the post and thought about and decided that I don't think I believe this happened. Seems to me someone has an agenda.

"Give it a bit of time and this little movie is going to be the most successful film in history. Bar none. Let the Hollywood people chew on that."

I agree with you. This film will be a vehicle for evangelism and for rekindling belief for many years to come. Mel Gibson has done the world a huge service by making this movie. I expect it to be a considerable force for good in a world that sure needs some help, right now.

As an aside, my daughter is married to a Muslim who was born in Pakistan. My son-in-law has expressed a desire to see the film. I hope it will make a strong impression on him. We shall see.

I just came in from seeing the movie. I'm drained and I have a headache. I'm almost speechless...

Your niece should say, "I LOOK REMARKABLY WELL FOR MY AGE THEN, DON'T I?

I had a friend who was taking her daughter out of a fine public school because a kid made an anti-semetic remark. I told her she should teach her child how to respond instead of running away. I mean, isn't that what we did in Germany. We didn't fight back. NEVER AGAIN.

to the calls of anti semitism

First the jews DID kill jesus (OK they forced Pilate to do it but same difference.) Just because the film portrays history (and the jews role) acurately does not make it anti semitic.

If Mel does the DVD with an extra half hour of footage it will sell millions of copies

I expect considerably more than that. More than one Christian will make the DVD a Christmas stocking stuffer for his friends and relatives

my niece plays basketball for a Jewish Community Center team. Yesterday they played the Methodists and right before the tipoff an 11 year old girl said to my niece in an angry and audible voice, "You killed my Savior!" NICE!

Yeah, and is your daughter one of the Romans?

Kids can be so stupid sometimes ...

Thing is, the bratty Methodist kid may not have gotten the idea from her parents, or the movie...she may have picked it up from the media and/or Abe Foxman. The media is practically daring folks to have anti-Semitic thoughts.

I am unaware of Methodist theology (or that of any other Christian denomination) that would teach a child to tell another child that "you killed my Savior" 2000 years after the Crucifixion. She didn't get it from a Christian church nor from the movie The Passion.

This is just as logical as a black person telling me that I am a slave driver. (But my grandfather 7 generations ago actually was ...)
