I am sorry to say the it took me two days to follow up on this, but I am happy to report that the check is in the mail as of this morning so it should reach across the state by Monday at the latest, assuming the USPS can get it there.
Again, please pass along additional best wishes to Don and Teri and thanks for pinging me.

A bump for two great FReeper warriors. Well, thank you. I aspire to be a FReeper warrior. But this was a real question - anyone know if there's a paypal account that one can send a payment to? If not, I'll send a check.
To: searchandrecovery
Sorry for not getting back to you. There is currently no Paypal setup. I'm told that it's not hard to arrange, but I haven't discussed it with Don and Teri, yet. Probably they'd have to run it by their lawyer first.
To: Physicist
Thanks for the update on Don & Terri. Sorry to understand that this saga continues as it should have been resolved in their favor many years ago.
Check will be in the mail tomorrow.

Questions:
1. why are we contributing to a defense fund instead of directly to the adamses
2. how much are you trying to raise
3. how much have you raised
I would like to chip in, but would like to know more.
To: staytrue
1. why are we contributing to a defense fund instead of directly to the adamses Good question. IANAL, but my understanding is that there needs to be a legal firewall between the money people donate to cover their legal bills, and their own personal money. This protects them from accusations of fraud: nobody can say, "hey I donated $20 to cover their legal bills, and they turned right around and spent it on pizza!"
2. how much are you trying to raise
As Don said in his message above, they need $2400 right away in order to file the appeal. If they receive more than that, which would surprise me, any excess money will sit in the account until the next fee is demanded...which it will certainly be.
3. how much have you raised
I do not know how much has been collected on behalf of Don and Teri in the past. Possibly they themselves don't know, either, since for a couple of years the money was managed by Judicial Watch. Since leaving Judicial Watch, Don and Teri have paid the bills out of their own pockets. I am not privy to how much has been raised as the result of this post, but presumably the first checks have only just started to arrive. I hope they have, anyway!

WOAH!!! STOP THE THREAD!!! I HAVE AN ANNOUNCEMENT!
An anonymous donor--the very soul of generosity--has put aside
FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS
that he will use to match new pledges, dollar for dollar, up to that amount.
If you haven't donated, now's the time. Post your pledge, or send it to me privately. New pledges only, please.
To: Physicist
Sent the check already. :-)
To: All
One more thing. I know that every dollar that's been pledged will actually be sent; there are few more trustworthy than Freepers.
But if you're anything like me, you're a procrastinator. Unfortunately, in this case, procrastination is disastrous, because the deadline for the fee is only a few days away.
Don't pledge unless you're sure you can get the check out on Monday or Tuesday. (If you're not sure you can send it that soon, don't pledge, but send what you can when you can.) The reason is that, if there are a lot of pledges, someone else might be dissuaded from contributing, but then if too many pledges come late, the deadline could be missed anyway.
A timely dollar is worth more than a late one!
To: RadioAstronomer
You're so timely, you even beat my admonition to be timely!
To: Physicist
:-)
To: Physicist
I knew there was a serious deadline here.
To: Physicist
"...or send it to me privately."I've sent my check to the ADF (at the PO Box provided) on Thursday using a company check, Physicist.
Should roll in today or Monday at the latest, I'd think.
The $500 donor's extremely generous & one hellova fine person.
This Bud's for him/her.

Wonderful news.....BUMP
My check was mailed on Thursday.
I also urge all Freepers to 'pledge' prayers for Teri & Don. Let us all pray for success for them in their struggle for justice.

"...or send it to me privately."YOW! I really put my foot in it, there; thanks for pointing it out. I didn't mean that people should send me the donation itself. I meant the pledge, in the event that the donor was shy about posting it to the thread. I'm not handling any dollars; I'm just keeping track of the next $500 worth of promises.
All the checks should all go to
The Adams Legal Defense Fund
P.O. Box 306,
Cheltenham, PA 19012
and be payable to "The Adams Legal Defense Fund".
To: Physicist
Bump!
To: Physicist
Knowing my tendency to procrastinate I actually wrote the check while I was reading the thread, walked out and put it in the company mail box. You should recieve it by Wednesday from Colorado.
Regards,
TS
