Mars rock pictures baffle scientists

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Microscopic photographs of a Mars rock taken by NASA's Opportunity rover have triggered excitement among scientists, even if they aren't unanimous on exactly what they're seeing.
The images, posted on Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Mars rovers Web site, show a highly detailed surface on a rock dubbed "El Capitan" that has been undergoing examination by the robot geologist.

Fond thoughts of John Hollerman. I wish he were still with us. It was great to see a passion for science in the media like John had. I hope NASA names a craft or site for him.

Yeah, that was tragic. At least the Internet is coming alive so there is plenty of space news these days while the pace of space exploration is increasing so rapidly.

I find the spheres embedded in the rock a lot less interesting than the odd slits that seem to cover the matrix.

Yeah, it looks like BB's in some sort of matrix. Damnedest thing I've ever seen. Mars is loaded with surprises. Anybody hear anything else about those 'threads' they were spotting near the landing site? They didn't know if they were from the airbags or not, and were going to have Opportunity look for more of them a little further out......

The talk over on the DU site is that, these threads are the very same ones posted by their disruptor brigades, and that they can't figure how they got to mars.

Interesting pick. It is good that they start finding more and more things that make them think a lot about how Mars is and what is going on in there. I wonder how weather up there is. Russians had plan to built huge mirrors and send them to space to melt some of Ice in Siberia. I wonder how that would work on Mars.
