If they don't live with family members or go into an institution, in many countries they become street kids, and are preyed upon by the rest of the street culture.

Lots of those kids don't survive to adulthood; those that do are often scarred for life.

Of course, the orphanage system in most third world countries isn't much better that the street :(

Thanks StillProud; but I meant orphans in the US that reside in states that don't have orphanages and rely on adoption of foster parents.

What happens with the unplaced ones?
