U.S. prepares Afghan offensive, bin Laden hunt

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- U.S. forces in Afghanistan have intensified operations near the Pakistan border to prepare for a broader spring offensive to hunt down al Qaeda fugitives, including Osama bin Laden, defense officials said on Friday.
The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the coming offensive, timed to exploit improving weather conditions in the remote, mountainous border region between Afghanistan and Pakistan, was being dubbed Operation Mountain Storm.
