Get a hand-cranked radio/flashlight combo. They're about $40 (I got mine at Bed Bath & Beyond, oddly - but I live in Florida, where hurricanes are common and people need emergency devices).

They operate off batteries, as well, but if your batteries run out, just cranking it for a few seconds will get it running again. It gets am/fm and shortwave.
