[history]
February 24, 2004 -- OVER the coming weeks, a quarter of a million U.S. troops will move into or out of Iraq. The logistics of such a transfer would be formidable even under peaceful conditions in a country with Western-quality infrastructure. No other power in the world could do it in Iraq - or anywhere else.

We're got the best army in the world and they are doing amazing stuff every day - the media won't let you hear about it. America is proud of them.

My nephew, a Marine, was in Iraq (at his request) for the beginning of the war. He came home (to our great relief) safe and sound.
Shortly after returning home, he requested to go back. His request was granted, and he returned to Iraq last week.
These guys are just the best. We are so proud of him.

Thanks, kattracks. We can't say it too often. Thank God for FR and the NY Post!
Recall how the pundits insisted that our troops were bound to fail, that Iraq was another Vietnam, a quagmire that would only worsen. Shamelessly, American ideologues who had been too good to serve in uniform themselves pretended that their only concern was the safety of our soldiers, who they wished to bring home immediately. Morale was going to break down, civilian "experts" insisted, our military would dissolve.
It wasn't just going to be Vietnam. It was going to be Oliver Stone's Vietnam.
Our soldiers' response? They broke the back of the Ba'athist insurgency. They captured Saddam. That deck of cards? Saddam and the boys were playing on credit - and G.I. Joe called 'em.

The largest troops rotation in history is underway. Roughly 130,000 US troops are going home, to be replaced by 110,000 arriving troops. "Already, as many as 4,000 trucks are on the road between Kuwait and Iraq at any moment," according to Army Brig. Gen. Jack Stoltz, who directs movement of troops and distribution of equipment...to grow to 60,000 by mid-March. A newly freed nation the size of California; over 23 million Iraqis without shackles for the first time in over 3 decades; our troops removing bad guys daily with help from our Coalition, civilian and Iraqi allies...in the middle of this longsuffering nation, on top of a giant weapons' cache, during wartime, during transition we didn't lose a single one of our brave Soldiers last weekend. Some of us would call that good news! Well done, troops! May God continue to bless and protect you.

There must be literally hundreds of stories about our soldiers and their experiences plus how Iraqi's lives have been impacted by their bravery and hard work. I hope we start seeing some good books on this in the future.
The media blackout on the good news going on in Iraq cannot last forever. I am hoping some of the soldiers coming home, after they get reaquainted with their loved ones, will come forward and show pictures and tell the side of the story there has been too little coverage of.

Your poster says it all.
In 1999, shortly before he died, Steven Ambrose, the writer of several books on the American GIs of WWII, came to my city for the convocation of Medal of Honor Winners. At that time, Time Magazine was soliciting nominations for the "Person of the Century" for its end of the year cover.
Ambrose was lobbying and advocating that the American GI of WWII win this honor. Winston Churchill won the cover, but it was the American GIs who won the war and defeated the scourge of the 20th century.
It is our wonderful American soldiers who are defeating the scourges of the 21st century, even as I sit here writing.
