Newsom marries lesbian high-ranking politician
Daily Journal Wire Report
SAN FRANCISCO As gay marriages continued throughout San Francisco City Hall Friday and protesters held signs and shouted outside, a private ceremony marrying a high-ranking lesbian politician and her partner took place in the mayors office.
Surrounded by friends and family, state Board of Equalization Chairwoman Carol Migden and her partner, criminal defense attorney Cristina Arguedas were married by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
Migden had just finished officiating a marriage on the steps of the City Hall rotunda when she led a crowd of well-wishers up to the mayors office holding a bouquet of roses.
She emerged after the ceremony with more flowers, arm and arm with her new spouse.
What a wonderful day, she said as she made her way to the reception on the balcony of city hall.
Its time to get with the future, she said of those who oppose the marriages that have been taking place in the last week, We are at a pivotal time in history.
State Senate President Pro Tem John Burton, who attended the ceremony believed that opposition to the marriages was not well placed.
Its much ado about nothing, he said Friday, noting that people should be more concerned with American deaths in Iraq and the budget deficit, things he believes really affect peoples lives.
The only people affected when two people get married, are the two people getting married, Burton said.

Officer of the Court? Naaahhhh... She was an OJ attorney.
This from the NY Times
Friday was the ninth day that the same-sex marriage licenses were issued in San Francisco following a directive by Mayor Gavin Newsom, bringing the total to 3,175 by 4 p.m. Hundreds of couples waited after hours to receive an appointment for a license next week. But protests by religious groups heightened, with some opponents at one point blocking entry to the county clerk's office.
At 10 a.m., Mr. Newsom officiated at the highest-profile wedding yet, that of Cristina Arguedas, 50, and Carol Migden, 55, who have been partners for 19 years. Ms. Arguedas is a criminal lawyer who once represented O. J. Simpson and Ms. Migden is chairwoman of the state's Board of Equalization. She has also served as a San Francisco County supervisor and a state assemblywoman.
Ms. Migden said her decision to marry was partly made to support Mr. Newsom.
"I expect there to be resistance," Ms. Migden said. "Any hard-fought civil rights gains certainly take a lot of time in the trenches. We are not afraid of that. We are not shying away from that. Frankly it all feels like a victory today."
