I spent a little time in eastern Europe before the Soviet Union fell, and while the group I was with was escorted by other military officers, a few times we saw ordinary citizens stopped by the police or whoever and had to show ID and answer any and all questions. My German was not very good and so I have no idea what was said, but another freeper posted about living over there for a short time, as a civilian, and that was the first thing that popped into my mind.

Not to worry. You'll soon be able to tell stories about how you saw things like that in this country before it fell.

I hope I'm not dating myself...but I can still remember having to present and LEAVE your Passport at the Registration Desk of EVERY hotel we checked into -- in both West and East Germany and points East...

The last few times the wife and I were back in the area - it was with a Tour Guide who "managed" our Passports throughout the travel, so I don't know if they still have to leave them with the Front Desk behind the "old iron curtain"...

At the time, I can remember being a little disturbed to leave my Passport with a clown whose trustworthiness was unknown.. I wouldn't mind SHOWING and having it copied or the numbers noted for recording transit of aliens through their country --- WE should be doing SOMETHING about that ourselves --- but I never understood why I had to leave the Passport at the Desk until I checked out...

I guess they didn't trust us!

One difference between the US and the Soviet Union is that there are millions of Americans who are well-armed, and who are very familiar with Solyztein's (sp) regrets about not resisting tyranny.

It won't be much longer, at the rate things are going.

The interim time should be used to enhance personal "skills", develop relationships with fellow Patriots, and perhaps most importantly wake up a few of the sheep.
