Thirty police hurt in riot February 16, 2004 6.10AM AEDT
THIRTY police officers were injured as they were pelted with bricks and Molotov cocktails during an overnight riot in inner-Sydney sparked by a youth's death.
Police reinforcements from across Sydney were called to Redfern after the riot by 100 youths broke out at about 6pm (AEDT) yesterday.
A police spokeswoman said the riot ended early today and four people were in custody, with police still at the scene.
It appears the incident was sparked by the death of a 17-year-old boy who was impaled on a metal fence after falling from his bicycle on Saturday.
Thomas Hickey died in hospital yesterday morning from his injuries.
His mother says her son was pursued by police, but they deny the allegation.
The police spokeswoman said 30 officers were injured but it was not yet clear how many required hospital treatment.
"Thirty police officers were injured to varying degrees," she said.
Reinforcements brought in from across Sydney included police rescue, the dog squad and highway patrol officers.
"I can confirm Molotov cocktails were used and there were bricks and bottles and such," the spokeswoman said.
The four people arrested are yet to be charged.
The spokeswoman said the arrests came during a police sweep of the area and were not directly related to the riot.
Redfern railway station has been reopened after being shut for several hours during the standoff.

Heh. No, don't you know ANYTHING about Sydney? Kiwis in Redfern? Rubbish...they're all in Bondi Beach on the dole.
...Oh yeah, I forgot. We cut off the dole to Kiwis until they could prove two years continuous residency in this country, back in 2001... *Trans-Tasman wink, nod, poke out of tongue and other friendly rivalry gestures...* (By the way shaggy, checked out the last paragraph of my "About" page, lately? ;-) ...heh!)

,,, look at post #83 - Jacqui didn't wait a week to get back to me. Gotta keep those Kiwis in their place. They'll do really well as a south Pacific regional superpower, don't you think?

,,, look at post #83 I have a parting comment...
The Jacobite charge which broke through the ranks of Barrell's regiment is counter charged by four British regiments including the 48th Legoniers regiment.

I take you and Helen Clarke (for our American FRiends, the New Zealand Prime Minister who last year famously said "If Al Gore had won in 2000, America wouldn't be invading Iraq right now") equally as seriously, shagggers, me mate. :-P

Aw shucks... thanks. :-)
Even with the intensely ironic signin name (a derivative of "Kangaroo Jack" - a movie so bad, even from the trailers I saw, that it became a joke between the late TrappedInLiberalHell and I), I sure do try.
After all, we never stop learning, do we? For example... I just checked the RNZAF homepage at http://www.airforce.mil.nz/home/main.htm and learnt that our wee friends across the Tasman actually do have more than 2 C-130 Hercules aircraft still left. (However, a nation that sells off - or is trying to sell of, lol - the best part of its aircraft strike force, is a bit of a joke really.)
Ooooh by the way...Hey shaggy? Did you hear that they're thinking of making a version of "Silence of the Lambs"?
They're thinking of calling it "Shut Up, Ewe"..... LMAO

She's your Prime Minister, mate, not mine. Looks like New Zealand is the one without a leg to stand on, I'm sad to say.

,,, the airforce sell-off is pretty much old news Jacqui. It's done it's time here on FR since it occured and the record will reflect my accute unhappiness with that decision. I don't legislate for New Zealand, just as you don't speak for all Australians. Now, get your airforce together. You'll need them for the rough and tumble that the boundary setting for the Torres Strait will generate.

Looks like New Zealand is the one without a leg to stand on, I'm sad to say.,,, nothing lasts forever. There's some competition on the rise for Xao Helen now and the curtain's closing on her show. Your media is too preoccupied with news about other things, so I thought I'd let you know that.

Let he who is without sin...
Anyway, don't call them MY news media. Who do you think I am, Rupert Murdoch or Kerry Packer in drag?

Excuse me, but you are talking to someone who did little else but study the Australian media for 3 and a half years, and has the degree from RMIT University Melbourne to prove it.
On a somewhat related topic, sorry to hear about your floods over there. Sympathies to those affected.

You need to go to the 99% of Sydney that is beautiful.East,North or Inner West. Why are you staying in the South-West anyway? Its like the dull Melbourne of Sydney. Why would a person want to go to Sydney now that the Ghan train runs from Alice north to Darwin? That makes it now possible to enjoy the breathtaking scenic splendor of the beautiful forests of the region.

Huger ~ you're right-on about firearms here in the US ~ we have an entirely different culture than most other countries ~ especially here in the Western states.
I was raised on a (born in 1930) farm (left the farm when I was fourteen and never went back) in Southern California and started shooting when I was five, I got my first firearm on my ninth birthday and have owned them ever since. I live Oregon and we have concealed carry here, which I do.
I've talked to my Kiwi buddy: shaggy eel about this and he doesn't have much use for handguns (like Matthew Quigley) :):)
I guess it's hard for others to understand that the Right To Keep And Bear Arms is our Constitution.
All of you are welcome to drop and try out any of my firearms ~ we can go up in the hills and blast away to our hearts content.
I have an old computer that I can't (as soon as the weather gets better) wait to take up there and fill full of holes. :):)
