US senator McCain slams Russia violations under Putin Sat Feb 7,12:21 PM !
MUNICH, Germany (AFP) - US Senator John McCain slammed Russian President Vladimir Putin and listed a litany of alleged violations Moscow had committed against its neighbours under his rule.
"President Putin's rule has been characterized by the dismantling of the independent media, a fierce crackdown on the political opposition, the prosecution of a bloody war against Chechnya's civilian population, and a new assertiveness that challenges the democratic and territorial integrity of Russia's sovereign neighbours," he said.
McCain, who was named Friday to head an inquiry into the use of intelligence that led to the Iraq war, said that Russia had flouted international military treaties and occupied parts of Moldova and Georgia.
Known as a frank speaker, McCain surprised many in the audience of defence luminaries gathered at the 40th annual security conference in Munich, southern Germany, with the vehemence of his condemnation.
He said that Russia's access to Euro-Atlantic institutions was based on the understanding that Putin was committed to free markets, the rule of law, democracy, press freedom and the respect of its neighbours.
"These now appear to be false premises," he said.
"It is time to send a strong signal that undemocratic behaviour and threats to the sovereignty and liberty of her neighbours will not profit Russia ... but will exclude her from the company of western democracies and consign her to the distrust and misfortune she had begun to escape in the more hopeful days of her liberation from tyranny."
McCain was speaking during a debate on the future of the NATO alliance, whose enlargement in June to the Baltic states has Russia feeling increasingly threatened.

(Just because you did not see it or read it, that does not mean it did or did not happen.)

Why? Perhaps I've missed something going on here behind the scenes. I spend more time than I should and less time than I would like on this forum, so I know I don't know all. I hate to see you quit posting. You've offered some valuable information and opinions here.

"What infurates me is the Republican strategy of co-opting the Dems by basically acting like a Dem"
Yep! Livid about sums it up (when I don't put on my Rummy paranoia~finds~the~plans~hat.) I do consider the possibility that this is a short term strategy though. If there was a high probability/possibilty of martial law occurring during the next 5 years would you feel better understanding the Machiavellian leap?
I do think there is a probability.
It's a simple matter of which leader is safer during a worst case scenerio. Who can play this global poker game to save our nation? The dems will have it a socialist democracy in a blink just as Russia did and then just as in Russia some oligarchy headed by another Lenin would quickly seize power. As long as the Republicans have control there is a greater chance of returning our nation to it's historic government after the martial law has resolved the crisis.BR>
Of course that doesn't diffuse my being livid but it does help me understand mt real anger is at the entire global scene, my lack of ability beyond a vote (aside from what ever good is done here) to change it and the bleakness I sense for our children's future. It is a righteous anger.

Thanks Cindy. I e-mailed a copy of that to my brother, a Vietnam veteran.

"That image says the jihad will plans to utilize a nuclear device before the end of 1424 A.H. or prior to February 21, 2004.
Whether or not they succeed is another matter entirely."
With the cliffhanger being the Russian military 7 hour simulated nuclear war.

Iron Eagle.
First off, my post was not directed at you or anything you said in this forum or anywhere else. I do not know you from adam, but I am more than happy to learn of your Reagan Republicanism. So am I a Reagan Republican.
Your seclect disecting of my words is rather curious. While i did indeed say that "should such an attack occur we will know where the plutonium for the device originated. That's who we will hold responsible."
However, Sir, nowhere, and I mean NO WHERE, DID I STATE IN WORDS EVEN CLOSELY APPROXIMATING YOURS THAT we are going to just nuke the Russian Federation because of evidence of the "origination" of the device.
Perhaps you missed my post to SCR1 wherein he asked the following question:
"Would an appropriate response be the use of a weapon of about the same size on a city from which country the bomb material came from?"
My reply was:
"The appropriate response is determined by the Commander in Chief under the advisement of the National Security Council, among others, and in accordance with longstanding US policy regarding an attack upon the United States utilizing any Weapon of Mass Destruction."
Perhaps this explains why you are an un-elected also-ran because you are remiss in completely researching a given subject matter. If this is the case the voters did themselves a service in ensuring you remained benignly at home. You waana throw mud bud, be prepared to have it tossed back at you two-fold with a rock inside.
If anyone here needs to "get serious" and learn how to read and comprehend the meanings of words it is yourself. Yes, (hint, hint) words mean things and I understand the meaning and intent of yours.
Al-Qaeda is a decentralized non-state entity. We deal with them as we see fit in the interest of our national security. If they manage to nuke a US city or detonate a radiological device we all will have to wait and see what this nations political leadership decides to do about it, and what the public demands the President to do.
If I were you I would stiffen my Reagan Republicanism and deal with the global war were are engaged in with the same steely determination he dealt in with respect to the Soviet Union, and try to keep the friendly fire incidents to a minimum.
Have a nice evening.

"a political rival of President Vladimir Putin set to challenge him in forthcoming elections after his wife reported him missing"
Things are not always what they seem...who has the most to gain...Putin is already expected to broadly win so I suspect someone else wants to taint him.
Le lenin?
