62 years later the causes of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 remains the "Mother of All Conspiracies" by some accounts and is still definitively unresolved to the satisfaction of all.
There were seven previous governmental investigations of the Pearl Harbor attack that preceded the Joint Committee on the Investigation of the Pearl Harbor Attack (1945-46). These were the Roberts Commission undertaken by Supreme Court Justice Owen J. Roberts in 1941 at President Roosevelt's request; the investigation conducted by Admiral Thomas C. Hart in 1944 at the behest of the Secretary of the Navy; the 1944 Army Pearl Harbor Board; the 1944 Navy Court of Inquiry; the 1944-45 investigation by Col. Carter W. Clarke for Army Chief of Staff George C. Marshall; Maj. Henry C. Clausen's 1944-45 investigation for the Secretary of War; and Admiral H. Kent Hewitt's 1945 study for the Navy Secretary.
Does anyone believe that these early investigations in to the cause of 9/11, justifications for an attack on Iraq and WMDs will settle the current spate of howls of conspiracy any more quickly or definitively?
It has occurred to me, that legitimate governments and Intel agencies would benefit from possessing (or at least making their enemies believe that they possess) rogue WMD. If I was OBL or a Saudi Sheik, I would be afraid of an American undercover operation that could deploy WMD against me. If the WMD could never be traced back to the American weapons programs, then America would not suffer the political blow-back from deploying the rogue weapons and it may be more likely that the Americans would use rogue weapons over their legitimate WMD arsenal. All is fair in asymmetric warfare.
