This is a subject that I find myself very interested in. You can check out http://www.near-death.com to read about the NDE's of a large number of people. Some are very different than others, but there is a commonality between them that is interesting to contemplate.
And all suspiciously similar to the archetypes and ideas we have all been exposed to our entire lives. What a shock!

....and as with other patterns of existence, just how is it that those archetypes are near universal?

BS.
There's plenty of details, specifics in MANY of such experiences which archetypes, hallucinations, blood chemistry etc.
ALL HAVE 0.0000000000000% EXPLANATION OF.
Comfort your biases and value orientation with that hallucination if you wish, but it is NOT FACTUALLY based.

Maybe because the "archetypes" are based on truth?? If there is one heaven it would make sense their stories would all be the same, even cross culturally.
Kind of like if you all got to peek into the same room- just for a minute. Being able to describe it and its contents accurately would LEND credibility, not discredit.
I throw that out as discussion fodder only, so (everyone) don't flame me.

The real shock is when you come face to face with death and you can smell and feel his breath.
