Fighting in Chechnya Kills at Least 11 (Basayev on the rampage -- Moscow on alert)

Rebel attacks and land mines killed at least 11 Russian servicemen and pro-Moscow Chechen police officers in Chechnya over a 24-hour period, an official in the region's Kremlin-backed administration said Monday.

Four of the Russian soldiers were killed and five others were wounded in rebel attacks on Russian outposts across Chechnya, the official said on condition of anonymity.

Three servicemen died in separate skirmishes with rebels in Chechnya's southern mountains, and two were killed Sunday when their fuel-laden truck hit a land mine and exploded in a giant fireball outside the village of Samashki, the official said.

On Monday, the bodies of two Chechen policemen with gunshot wounds were found on a street in the capital, Grozny, the official said.

Russian artillery, meanwhile, shelled suspected rebel hideouts in several parts of Chechnya, he said, adding that Russian forces also detained some 170 Chechen residents since Sunday.

In the eastern Gudermes region, federal authorities killed a suspected rebel warlord and detained several accomplices, Russian military spokesman Ilya Shabalkin told the Interfax news agency.

Russian troops left Chechnya after a disastrous 1994-1996 war against separatist rebels that killed tens of thousands of people and left the mostly Muslim region with de facto independence.

The Russian army rolled back into the region in September 1999 after Chechen rebels attacked a neighboring province, and after the Kremlin blamed militants for apartment-building bombings that killed some 300 people in Russian cities.

So the Chechens have been reduced to hit and runs and land mine attacks? Ooooo scary. Land mines don't win wars.

I missed the joke...you are joking right? What the chechens are doing is called "untraditional warfare ...ala hit-n-run, landmines, booby traps, sneak attacks"

It worked in Vietnam against US...it worked in Afganastan in the 80's against the Soviets. Hell, it worked for the Americans in our fight against the British empire.

If you are under the impression that the Vietnamese in their millions beat America through such tactics the joke is on you. Especially funny in seeing as how no American lived in Vietnam and that Vietnam was not part of America or her economy.

Chechnya is a vital strategic part of Russia and has been longer then most parts of America have been in the Union. India, Isreal, the UK in Northern Island all show that a nation can fend off such attacks. Now that the Russians have Chechens fighting the Chechens it is even more sustainable. Especially since most of the rebel terrorists are outsiders who don't live long in battle.

why did Russia decide to draw the line in Chechnya?===

IMHO it because the territory of Chechnya as it is includes good chunk of former cossack region of Terek Cossacks the whole north of Terek river.
Coomies gave that territory to chechns after they helped them against cossacks during Civil War 1918-22.
So when Russia was reestablished some liberals agreed to allow chechens to get away with that land. But later even them decided to reconsider. The first chechen war began.

To get out now sounds same as of someone who tells America to get out of Iraq now. After she crushed Saddam there apparently nothing to do. Same way in Chechnya!
But we all know that if Russia departs from Chechnya or America from Iraq ther will be new islamic khaliphat duirng few months.

BTW as Destro already pointed many chechens don't want to live in islamic khaliphat. They fight against rebels now. They die for the cause of moderate and civil Chechnya.
Russian federal forces just help them now. Accualy many of chechens are part of federal forces too. As well as local forces consisted of chechen completely.

"Land mines don't win wars."

Resolve wins wars. You could fight with stones and the wars won't end until one party puts down arms or is wiped clean off the map. I would add Somalia as one where small arms drove out a superior force. In that case the US will finish the job.

"Ooooo scary." Don't tell that to a US patrol in Iraq. IED are scary and quite deadly.

It only work if you allow it to work, it work on colonies never once work on integral part of other nation. It fail in Vietnam, S.Vietnam fall to conventional army of N.Vietnam. Afghanistan was one year assistance mission that stretch into 10 years and in foreign nation. Soviets got out, but in process 1 million less Afghans.

It fail in Bolivia, it fail in Argentina, it fail in Chile, it fail in Malasia, it fail in China, it fail in Kashmire, you give guerrila to much credit, try reading a bit more.

By way, US win with England, because France interviene and give US weapons and attack England in various areas, England over stretch.

Scary, deadly, but overall ineffective. As Russian army modernize and professionalize, this become much more difficult....most casualties due to lack of training, discipline, plain and simple. Also, Chechins less and less part of Jihad, attrition and all that, more and more Arabs who come in through Georgia (which US give monies to stop that...so much for investment). Arabs kill locals as much as Federal forces. In last incursion to Daghistan, Arabs shoot all Chechins in group when trying to escape, Chechins want surrender. Chechins know they might get jail or beaten, but most likely live to stand trial...Arabs on other hand are meat, so they shoot Chechins selves....and in end still become meat.

Why does'nt putin support israel, and the U.S. more in there fight against the islamic terrorist. If you defeat them in the middle east then surely in could help the situation in Chechnya. I have also wondered something else. Why christians in the west do not support thier brethren in russia, middle east, africa etc. from the islamic terrorist.

That's good to hear. I just wish they would stop selling arms to the islamic countries, and the US should stop selling arms to saudi and egypt etc. Both countries should stand together and call for syria to remove its troops from lebanon, so it can be free again.
