Two Teens Shot INSIDE D.C. Public High School (16 year-old reported dead)
Monday, February 2, 2004 | Kristinn

Allan Etter, spokesman for the Washington, D.C. Fire Department, says two teenagers were shot inside Ballou Senior High School in Southeast, Washington, D.C. this morning.

One teen was shot in the chest and is being Medivacced to Childrens Hospital. The other was shot in the leg and is being treated on the scene before transport to a local hospital.

No report on whether the shooter was caught or if it was more than one shooter.

Our nation's capital is in the throes of a violent crime wave with almost one murder a day, gang warfare in broad daylight, bus drivers being stabbed and children being robbed at gunpoint for their Northface down winter coats.

Recently, a 14-year-old girl was assassinated for being a possible witness to a drug-war hit between rival gangs.

This must be an Onion article. Everyone knows guns are not allowed in DC.

I think you need to get the Admin Mod to pull your post. We aren't allowed to post complete articles from the Washington Compost or the LA Slimes, per the terms of the lawsuit.
News reports from the 2 can be excerpted, but the link to the original must be shown.

More people were murdered in Washington D.C. last year than we lost in Iraq, 600 vs/500.

Where are the Liberals, screaming this mess needs to be investigated by an independent body and those responsible held accountable for this ghastly state of affairs?

The Post article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A5463-2004Feb2.html) has a picture of the fatality, James Richardson, "a star running back on Ballou's football team."

The picture was taken by Joel Richardson - anyone know if they are related?

It also said the boy was shot in the back, not the chest.

I believe it involves relocating our capitol to Denver...

Why ruin Colorado? Couldn't we just send it to an already zany place such as Berkeley, Ithaca, or Madison instead?

Perhaps they should make guns double-plus-illegal to own in D.C. That should do it.

Only if they triple-stamp it, no backsies, to infinity plus one, touch blue make it true.

The murder rate in DC doesn't concern most libs as they have already got their agenda passed there, I.E., no law abiding, responsible gun owners are committing these murders.

The shootings occurred on the first floor outside the cafeteria around 10:30.... Metal detectors are used to screen students and visitors at the school.... Police looking for three suspects, possibly in Berry Farms neighborhood.

Something sounds odd about this. Any word on how they defeated the metal detectors? Did they just burst through, or what?

My what a big beltbuckle you have, my dear. (/sarcasm)

They still have a rifle club and a competitive rifle team, both of which are popular with the students.

DC should do some pretty radical things, IMO, with their schools. They should shut them all down and fire all the teachers and staff, and start all over again from zero. Zero tolerance for mediocre teachers, zero tolerance for lazy administrators, back to basics lessons/subjects, dress code or uniforms, strong/good male role models...
...but then a lot of these kids go home to drug houses or homes where mom comes and goes, no dads. When kids are young their hearts are still intact and their love of life and thirst for learning is there; it's a crying damn shame that we lose so many of them along the way. Circle must be broken somehow.

I'm sorry Sidebar Moderator. Thank you for pulling the complete text. I know better. I goofed up.

To All. Notice how this story was kept a secret nationally.

At this time, they don't know who the killer was, they don't know how he/she got in there.

Is this a cover up or what?

This poor soul was probably watching the SuperBowl yesterday with enthusiasm and today he is dead.

For this story to not get national coverage is disgusting.

Obviously the answer is to control the guns and understand the little terrorists darlings, who are obviously only acting out something they can't understand. Oh yeah, and it's probably due to poverty and bad achools for lack of government funding and I'm sure there was racism involved. Did I miss any?

I do believe you did miss one: Probably raised by right-wing religious fanatics.

The police named a suspect tonight. The dead boy's father said he was trying to transfer out of the school because he had been threatened before.

I listen to news 24/7, live 40 miles away from DC and never heard a word about this on an media outlet.

Here is an article (NOT the Washington Post) that has some interesting background on the school. I want to add this to the voucher discussion thread as well.

1 student killed, 1 injured in shooting at Washington, D.C., high school

WASHINGTON (AP) - One student was killed and another wounded Monday in a shooting at a high school in the U.S. capital, authorities said.
James Richardson, 17, a student at Ballou High School, died after being shot several times in the chest, said Chief Charles Ramsey of District of Columbia police. An 18-year-old student suffered a minor graze wound to one leg and was hospitalized, Ramsey said. An arrest warrant was issued Monday night for Thomas Joshua Boykin, 18, police said. Ramsey blamed the shooting on a dispute between students that began sometime last week. Everyone involved was believed to be a student at Ballou, he said.
"It's a sad, tragic, terrible day for our city," said Mayor Anthony Williams, who pledged his support for efforts to improve school security. He also called on parents and students to help.
"We need your help in bringing the perpetrators to justice. We need your help in providing (a) safe learning environment for children," said Williams.
The shootings occurred at about 10:30 a.m. EST near the cafeteria, authorities said. The building was locked down and students were kept inside. Relatives and friends of the students were allowed inside the school about 90 minutes after they had gathered outside the crime scene tape in front of the building. They were briefed by school officials and then allowed to take their children home.
The scene outside was chaotic, with parents screaming and complaining loudly about security.
Ballou has been the scene of other trouble in recent months. The school was closed from Oct. 2 to Nov. 5 after a student removed mercury from an unlocked science classroom and then splattered the toxic substance in various areas of the building. Decontamination of the building took more than a month.
The school's reopening was marred by gunfire just before classes let out, when a man allegedly fired a handgun in the direction of the building. "We can't take this any longer," said interim Supt. Elfrida Massie, who invited community leaders to work with her to solve problems at Ballou. "One agency cannot solve this problem alone."
D.C Council member Kevin Chavous called for immediate measures to improve security, including security guards and metal detectors at every exit.
"We are going to have to put some extreme resources in here to do whatever is necessary to protect our kids," he said.

So, let me get this straight.

A kid comes in through the cafeteria, whacks one and injures another and the board member finally says we have to do something about this?

The lack of media followup on this is disgusting.

So, I must surmise:

1. They are protecting the teachers Union?
2. They are protecting the D.C. police?
3. They are protecting the guards?
4. They are protecting............Oh, crap...........everyone?
5. All of the above.

I just don't get it.

Why is not the media all over this?
