Recovering Spirit Sets Sight on Cake These are some of the first images sent back from the panoramic camera on the Mars Exploration Rover Spirit since the rover fell ill on the 18th sol, or martian day, of its mission. They were acquired at Gusev Crater, Mars on Sol 26 (Jan. 29, 2004), showing that the camera's health remained excellent during Spirit's recovery. Two of Spirit's potential target rocks can be seen above. The rock on the left has been named "Cake" after its resemblance to the dessert. The white rock on the right has been named "Blanco."

Creepy. The one on the right looks like the upper part of an animal skull. Wouldn't THAT be interesting?

Looks like more of that 'sedimentary' rock like at Challenger Station.

The rock on the left is the top corner of a block that was intended to be shipped to Earth and used by ancient astronauts as part of a Mayan pyramid. The cost overruns of transporting blocks from Mars became too high and eventually the project was outsourced to stone carvers in the Yucatan. Europeans came with syphilis and killed off the native stone-carvers. By that time the Martian quarries had been abandoned and all the trained Martian stone-carvers had been retrained in service positions so the extraterrestrials decided to invest in real estate in another part of the galaxy and left.
See what you can learn from a rock?

The name Spirit should be renamed in honor of both Mars and the cost to Red Ink.
Oh my god! That looks like... could it be... a rock.

You need to ping Willie Green with this finding.

Cool - great rock pictures. I'm so glad the government is spending my tax dollars on so worthy a venture.

Yeah, I wish they would find a cure for myopia first. Gee, and I was expecting someone to tell me what great benefits to mankind this mission would bring. How disappointing.

I was expecting someone to tell me what great benefits to mankind this mission would bring. The goal is to locate evidence of present or past life on Mars and the strategy is to zero in on spots where the chances for discovery are maximized. Given that two satellites have been orbiting Mars for months, searching for likely combinations of surface factors, the two Rover landing spots have been carefully chosen. The Rovers will hopefully provide leads for the next step in the search.
