Recovering Spirit sends New Picture
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit took and returned this image on January 28, 2004, the first picture from Spirit since problems with communications began a week earlier. The image from the rover's front hazard identification camera shows the robotic arm extended to the rock called Adirondack. As it had been instructed a week earlier, the Moessbauer spectrometer, an instrument for identifying the minerals in rocks and soils, is still placed against the rock. Engineers are working to restore Spirit to working order so that the rover can resume the scientific exploration of its landing area.

Good to hear. Was the problem that Spirit had too many temp files in its flash memory?

Good to hear. Was the problem that Spirit had too many temp files in its flash memory? I once had relatives who never read instructions. Running Win3.1, when they were through with the computer they would just TURN OFF THE SWITCH and walk away.
Finally, there was no room left to run the swap file, and they called me and I could not believe what I saw in the poor hard drive.
So, who knows? I sure learned that ~*.TMP files can terminally constipate a system.
I told them it was a " One D Ten T interface failure".
The phone was ringing when I got home..one of them wrote it out.....

Was it NASA asking you for your opinion on how to fix the Spirit?

Yeah, Bob. If the camera panned up we could see James Brolin and O.J. Simpson in the background.

The Sand People finally turned it back over! The Martians must be friendly. I nominate Howierd Dean to be Earth's ambasador.

Yep, this is just how I pictured the Martians setting our Great Pyramids in place. Yea, sure, humans built those things. NOT!

1D10T failure is a well known IT joke :) And an instant 'lose the job' type joke too, just to warn.

Thanks for the warning, but I intend to use this with in-laws. I am already in enough trouble with them that a little more won't hurt 8^)

Thank you for the ping... it's great to see that the JPL flight controllers are getting back to scientific exploration after a brief engineering pause...
Looks like they'll be back to going where no man has gone before soon!

Wonderful picture, Loki.
I did a twirl around the major news sites an hour ago, and none of them had any fresh Mars news at all.
Where'd that come from? Space.com?
