I stated earlier that I would wait a while before commenting, and after about 22 hours, I now have an opinion to share.
I am not happy about this terrible decision of his, and I too am angery at "Dubya's" blatant apeal to the Libs. However, I try my best to avoid self infliction of pain, and am not mad enough at him to go out and vote for a Third party candidate on election day either!

I cant prove it but, I truly believe that his intentions for doing this are rooted in some strange political calculation, that I don't understand nor appreciate. But because I am unable to digest his latest cause celeb, I refuse to throw the baby out with the bath water!

We all remember how the Republican base treated his father, because he renigged on his "No New Tax" stand, along with other forgotten flip flops. George SR's response to his defeat by Clinton was that it was a political calculation that didn't pay off for him on either account, and he lost the white house because of it!

Well many said he had it coming and deserved to lose his support because he ignored his base. That is without a doubt the truth. But who paid for teaching Bush Sr. a lesson? We all did! For eight long, agonizing years we paid for teaching Bush Sr., and we are still paying today!

So, might I suggest that you rethink your support for him, unless of course you enjoyed the Clinton years, and would like to further the leagacy of the man from Hope.

In which case it is certain, that far more Liberal programs will get more support and funding than just the NEA, and those fiscally responsible Dems will be needing huge funding for all these programs, which will mean BIG TAX INCREASES for us all!
And of course with a Democrat in the White House, we will all feel more secure as a Nation too!

Many of us think of this as a conservative forum, not a GWB cheerleading section.

Many of us consider GWB to be as conservative a President as this country will ever be able to elect. Yet you choose to trash him.

I think we need to get off being "Bushbots" and "Bushnots" and start debating what constitutes "true conservatism," because I seriously doubt that many of those whose posts I've seen trashing the President are really conservative. They may call themselves that, but it's some kind of throw-back mutated concept of conservatism.

I didn't enjoy the Clinton years, far from it (I flew my flag upside down and came close to fist fight with one of my union neighbors).

BUT, no more serious damage was done to our country than GWB has been perpetrating.

And again, Goldwater DID NOT WIN ;what followed followed, but his loss gave us a Dem president.

If you want to play that game, then you need to give President GHWBush accolades, because his defeat gave us a GOP majority in both Houses and the House's IMPEACHMENT of Clinton! See ? I can play your game too, using your rules, which refutes your complaints about 40 years of GOP betrayal. :-)

[best argument] For abortion ? You're it.

Is that the best you can do?

I wonder how many votes you guys are picking up for Bush with the argument?

You do your part -- vote "R", and STFU. Oh, and donate, too.

That's pretty much their argument.

One particularly creepy bot even suggested that anyone who questions Bush either needs Viagra or should have been aborted.

Some of them are really getting fanatical. It's only going to accelerate as the election nears.

BTW, I'm tempted to save some of the posts here about how "irrelevant" we are, then post them on threads this summer when the bots are calling for volunteers and donations.

IT AIN'T BRAIN SURGERY.

IT'S NOT ABOUT WINNING.

IT'S ABOUT PRINCIPLES!

OTHERWISE YOU ARE LOSING NO MATTER WHICH "PARTY" YOU VOTE FOR.

You're a politcal naif ( worse, actually!),` wouldn't recognize a Conservative, if your were bitten on the nose by one, are NO Conservative at all, yourself, and since you appear to have been happier to have had TWO terms of Clinton, than one more term of President Bush the elder, you have a death wish too.

You'd be far happier on some other site. I suggest you go read Jim Robinson's newest thread.

Here is what Rush had to say about this:

It's Not Working!
January 29, 2004

On Thursday, I took two calls on the Bush proposal to increase the National Endowment for the Arts' budget. (See: Who Needs the NEA?) As part of his continuing strategy to peel off Democrat voters by growing government, Bush wants to force all of us to give the NEA $15 to $20 million in 2004. Where in the Constitution does it say the federal government will fund art? If we like it, we can fund it on our own.

I can only explain what I think is happening. I can't explain why the White House thinks their strategy is working when it's clearly not. Bush 41 didn't have a strategy, as one caller mentioned when comparing the two presidents. Bush 43 does - and I'm sad to say it's taken the shape of outspending Bill Clinton on the domestic side. This immigration bill and the $400 billion (Now $540b) Medicare entitlement makes conservative voters feel taken for granted.

The Big Theory, softening people's view of conservatism by making Americans work more for government and less for themselves, isn't working. How can it? If you act like a liberal to get Democrat votes, you can't do something conservative when you win without losing those new voters. Bush requested $15 billion to fight AIDS in Africa and let Ted Kennedy write an education bill that spent more on "the children" than ever, and they still rip him to shreds on those issues. You know, Republicans told us that we needed to give them control of the House, Senate and White House to get something done.

I found the thread:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/1067935/posts

He didn't say anything that all of the other Bushbots havn't been saying. I was waiting for the "Dean Scream" at the end of the post.

I guess as long as Bush does a good job with the "War on Terror" none of his domestic policies really matter. Keep increasing the size of the Federal Government, keep wasting our tax dollars unconstitutionally, that is what the people want after all, and if you keep giving the people what they want, they will keep voting for you.
