In the early 1970's someone imported some hippy beads and they were made with Castor Beans (source of ricin), they killed a baby or two that chewed on them.
They are a lovely seed, about the size of a dime or flattened marble, with spots, brown, white, orange, and black. Very striking.
I grew them for years, to repel gophers.

The thing about the castor plant is that it's a beautiful landscaping plant, though people who garden with it usually know that small children should never be anywhere near it, because of the seeds.

And using those seeds for beads I sure hope isn't done anymore!
