Your approach leads to a modest proposal: Why not hang captured illegals? -- that would self-deport them, even more quickly.< /sarcasm> Get rid of the sarcasm tag and you'd be right on. Illegal aliens are no more than non-uniformed enemy combatants in the war against terrorism. They all deserve to be shot and the bodies repatriated (from 10,000 feet - over the enemy's capital)
(Ok maybe dropping the bodies on the capital was extreme but they are still enemy combatants)

Let's see. This worked so well the first time that Bush wants to try it again. Next thing you know we'll have new social program legislation under the title of Grand Society.

The actual WORD amnesty wasn't used, BUT what transpired was "amnesty"
amnesty
n 1: a period during which offenders are exempt from punishment 2: a warrant granting release from punishment for an offense [syn: pardon] 3: the formal act of liberating someone [syn: pardon, free pardon] v : grant a pardon to (a group of people)

He was dispatched quite a while ago - was well-versed and well-spoken on immigration matters. Aha, I see that the thread is from several years ago. It is hard to imagine the poster of so informative a thread being banned. Maybe the mods inform us of his transgression(s).

Sabertooth got into serial heated arguments about illegal immigration (a topic that at that time Mr. Robinson displayed considerable discomfort) with another poster (the heat going both ways), and then took exception to some of Jim Robinson's decisions about what was appropriate and about bannings, which he thought were selectively and inconsistently applied, and that all led to a series of suspensions, with the leash ever tighter, until no leash was left, and the trap door was opened. That is my take on the matter in any event.
Sabertooth was and is a friend of mine (although we disagreed about how to deal with illegals, but less so as time went on as I moved part of the way towards his position). I miss him here, and the rigor of his mind, his excellent research capabilities, and his well developed writing skills (the guy was an English major from a rather prestigious university).
And so it goes. I hope that helps.
