President George W. Bush blew it Tuesday night. He delivered a State of the Union address that downplayed his most promising - and potentially revolutionary - domestic-policy initiatives. Earlier drafts had reportedly contained a lengthy exposition of his vision of an "ownership society," expanded and strengthened by tax changes and Social Security reform.

All my friends are lifelong conservatives, and while we won't sit anything out, we are wondering what's up with the immigration & Man to Mars stuff.

What worries me are the 20% in the middle who don't always vote, and are easily swayed if they do. Comments from moderates at my office (people who voted for Reagan AND Clinton - go figure) are not real pro Bush these days. You know the type, they decide who to vote for based on 30 second commercials. They were pro Bush 6 months ago, now they seem alot more neutral.

And who cares if Hillary runs, she is no more liberal than any other Democrat running. She cannot unite the country behind the Dem party and Ive read she is a tyrant who is not open to advice from other people. translation: she'd be a horrible President and is politically tone-deaf. I fear Edwards much more than Hillary.

Trying to predict elections is a waste of time, as typically those who are most voicerifous about their "predictions" have a vested interest such as discouraging others from running or advancing (or not advancing) a particular agenda.

For example those who have been saying "Bush in a landslide" for the last 2 years here, had an agenda of preventing a primary challenger from running, coupled with belitting the arguments of those who criticized Bush (why debate an issue with someone when you can just say "we don't need your vote"?). I can promise you that we will see these same expert prognosticators begging for folks to help out the campaign by summertime.

And those who have been saying that Dean was the only candidate who could defeat Bush had an agenda of getting Dean enough momentum so that he could gather enough endorsements to prevail in the primaries. We saw last week how well that worked.

In my experience of watching this stuff, those who spend their time talking about who is "electable" and who isn't, generally come out on the losing side. Those who spend their time on an agenda of limited government and are honest with the people (or at least create that percpetion) usually win.

The demos are getting all the coverage, right now. It is also still January. Also Janet was a big Buchanan supporter on FR in 2000. She was never a Bush supporter and it's only logical that her friends aren't either.

The fastest way for lose liberties is for terrorism to prevail. The Patriot Act is not a threat to liberties, terrorism is. If the Patriot Act prevents terrorism, it is protecting liberties, not threatening them.

It's like: "If I can't have a machine gun, then I'm gonna vote for a Democrat who will take away everybody's guns. So there!"

After the amnesty proposal I left the rep plantation. I am now going to vote for the Constitiution Party.

I am seriously looking into these guys as well as some of the other alternative parties.

not sole. I just think that debate, and different opinions are good. Not a vote for anyone but Bush is a vote for the dems. Its tiring.

The Bush/Rove Republicans are just as bad as the Democrats - undoubtably there are distinctions to be made but the net result is that both are bad for the Country.

I believe that the Republicans will turn back to a more conservative approach if they lose enough conservative voters to hurt them in the elections.

Otherwise they will continue to converge with the Democrats.

Neither actually. I live in TX. If GWB is in danger of losing TX then he has lost so many other states he has lost the election. I can vote my conscience and it will have 0 effect on GWB. But at least I would have made my stand.
