Second Rover Lands Successfully on Mars

NASA's Opportunity rover successfully landed on Mars late Saturday, arriving at the Red Planet exactly three weeks after its identical twin set down.

"We're on Mars everybody," mission scientist Wayne Lee declared as fellow members monitoring the landing at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory burst into wild applause.

The unmanned, six-wheeled rover landed at 9:05 p.m. PST in Meridiani Planum, NASA said. The smooth, flat plain lies 6,600 miles and halfway around the planet from where its twin, Spirit, set down on Jan. 3.

Together, the twin rovers make up a single $820 million mission to determine if Mars ever was a wetter world capable of sustaining life.

Since arriving, Spirit has developed serious problems, cutting off what had been a steady flow of pictures and other scientific data.

I was watching. After the landing, Governor Arnold went through Mission Control congratulating the crew. You'll never guess who was with him. Uncle Martin himself, AlGore!!!!

Al just stopped in to take care of the computer problem. After all, the inventor should have the privilege of having a crack at it. Yeh, right!!

Yeap... but Gov Schwarz was there too. It was great to see the Gov actually talking with the scientists. Gore was just standing around looking like an out of place buffoon.

I want the dope on why Al Gore went on the floor and then Arnold came out and upstaged him essentially.

Arnold has been on Mars, whereas Al Gore is just in outer space.

Maybe its me, but the controllers seemed happier to see Arnold. Wasn't Algore wanting to put up an expensive satellite so we could all watch the earth spin on its axis or something? Great use of tax dollars.

From what I saw Gore was just standing in the background taking up space…kind of reminiscent to his days as VP.

One major reason to have them on opposite sides of Mars, both can't be transmitting at the same time towards earth, and the orbiting craft can only receive from one at a time as well.

What an idiotic premise...I am so sick of this childish, myopic view on why the human race is so fascinated with exploration and discovery...

Shut up
