I just have this weird picture of some Martian laughing their tail/? off while removing and re-installing the Spirt's antenna.

Here's hoping they get this cleared up soon and not 'burn' too much time trouble-shooting.

"Previously, the rover's performance had been virtually flawless."

In a way, this performance is still correct. Error correction schemes were built into the system, both on Earth and Mars, and it seemed to fit the bill. Mostly, Spirit helped itself, which is great.

But due to recent security updates, when the onboard computer is re-booted, the password will have to be entered from a physically connected keyboard.

Great news!
Here's hoping Spirit doesn't start sending SPAM emails in the background, heh.

Good news but, it does not say that the problems are understood or corrected yet. Pretty much just a 'beep', "I'm still here".

Sounds like there's a pulse, but know brain activity. I wonder if thet can reboot and or reload the system?

In previous reports, they were saying that the data rate was a mere 120 bits/second --problems with the high gain antenna, perhaps?

This is really good, all things considered. After the news yesterday, I figured the whole mission was in the dumper. Even if the rover is functioning at a limited capacity, it sure beats getting nothing at all from it.

Actually folks, Spirit is running on VxWorks from Wind River Systems, a RTOS (real-time operating system) designed to control hardware like this. JPL uses VxWorks on a number of their spacecraft. No one not psychotic would use Windows (or Mac OS X, or ordinary Linux...) to control something like a space probe.
