Legislative Update January 20, 2004 They're baaack! Tonight at 9:00 p.m., the president will present his annual State of the Union speech before a joint session of the House and Senate. During his speech, President Bush is widely expected to discuss the proposal he made on January 7 for a sweeping amnesty and guestworker program. New Poll Shows Bush a Loser on Amnesty and Guestworkers Clearly, the president is ignoring the views of the general public. A new poll by CBS News and the New York Times shows Bush's approval rating down 10 points, from 60 percent to 50 percent, since his amnesty/guestworker announcement. Meanwhile the poll finds the president's disapproval rating has risen to 45 percent. CBS attributes the abrupt change to three factors, not least of which is his immigration proposal.

Many thanks to all of you for your overwhelming response to our Action Alerts for calls, e-mails, and faxes letting the president and members of the House and Senate know how you feel about Bush's proposal. It has made a big difference already, but we're not out of the woods yet. Please keep it up by calling the White House at 202-456-1111 and by using your Legislative Action Center to help you send a free fax to your members of the House and Senate.

Hagel and Daschle to Introduce Amnesty Legislation This week, Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) and Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-SD) may introduce legislation responding to President Bush's amnesty/guestworker proposal. While none of the details are known as yet, the legislation is widely expected to be even more far-reaching than the president's plan. The Hagel-Daschle plan is expected to differ from Bush's, for example by offering citizenship to illegal aliens on an accelerated basis. You can contact Senator Hagel to let him know your views by calling his office at 202-224-4224 or send him an e-mail at http://hagel.senate.gov/email/contact.html. Senator Daschle's leadership office can be reached by calling 202-224-5556 or by e-mail at mailto:tom_daschle@daschle.senate.gov. Please feel free to use the talking points contained in the Alert linked above.

You one issue voters are making yourselves look ridiculous with your Tancredo for President when you know full well he could not get elected and has no desire to run.

Now get a grip -- if Trancredo ran for President then he would have to go to Congress to have them write the bill on the Immigration. Do you understand that fact? The President does not write Immigration Law -- the Congress does. So why would Tancredo give up a House seat to run for President when he has more power in the House?

You didn't bother to read. I have been preaching that you all make sure your Congressmen and Senators are on board as they write the laws not the President.

That's my point -- you are all going after President Bush for his proposal on Immigration; however, it is a proposal not an Executive Order which means Congress writes the law on Immigration and you should be concentrating on Congress not the President.

Now do you understand that little fact! If you think it is sarcasm, well it is because the attacks on Pres Bush for his proposal is ludicrous since he doesn't WRITE the laws!

I am suspected of what, exactly?

Of having values that transcend indivual issues?

Of loving my country, and desiring that it remain free and safe?

Of supporting my son's Commander in Chief in time of war?

Of understanding that God has blessed this nation greatly, and has placed George W. Bush in authority over us?

Of praying for the future of this nation, for a return to God's laws and morality?

Of valuing and believing in the sanctity of human life, the institution of marriage, and moral behavior?

Is this why I am a 'usual suspect?'

If so, I wear your insult PROUDLY, and hope you use it in your emotionally overwrought posts again and again.

I am PROUD to support this President, and I don't give a rip what you think about that.

Well, that's good, because Bush said in his speech that he opposes amnesty. So, who is wrong here: Bush,

Yes.

I tend to believe the President, and every attempt to twist his proposal into what it isn't is disingenuous and untrue,

No. Bush saying that the legalization of illegals isn't an amnesty is disingenuous and untrue.

Please go to http://dict.org and type in amnesty. Then please explain how Bush's plan isn't amnesty. All the defs on that site are from works that are at least 70 years old and in the public domain so the excuse that they are PC/Liberal sources does not work.

Or you can look at my post 36 (i think) where I have copied the definitions to save fellow FReepers time.

Thank You for reading.

This is NOT a single issue and if you are unable to see that then there is no point in further discussion about it, I certainly would not be able to convince you. I voted for Bush.. supported him even through thick and thin but NOT on this issue .. no waivering on this. This will change our country irreparably.

You are right that the president doesn't write the laws but you fail to remember that Bush has proposed this fiasco. The fault lies with him. And yes, we must lobby our congressmen.

When “guests” have babies, does that make them US Citizens?

I want to thank Bush for reminding me in his address of the Bush Amnesty. Maybe I shouldn't have been reminded. Because, it really pisses me off.

And, I have a question about giving legal status to illegal aliens as “guest workers”.

He calls them “guests”. When these “guests” have babies, does this make them US citizens?

They will have three years to make one. Or two. Or three.

"I want them kicked out as soon as possible." This is 10,000,000 people. I'm not saying it is impossible -- I'm just saying it takes more than waving a magic wand. The Tancredo "4-point plan" just says: "provide adequate resources . . . to allow apprehensionion and removal of all criminal aliens" (point 3, bullet one -- quoted in post 19)

Questions:
-- is "criminal" synonymous with "illegal" -- if so, he owes us some estimate of what those resources will be.

Importantly, if you are after them "all", how do you identify them? Most people on this site are dead against any kind of identity card that you can produce to show you are a citizen. If so, can you just round up anyone that looks or talks funny? Lots of citizens do. In our area recently we had a raid on a work site that picked up a goodly number of illegal aliens. Well and good. It also picked up, handcuffed, and detained, a 17-year old genuine citizen girl who was working there -- why, "she looked like one of them." She was under no obligation to carry any identity document, nor, under current law, could she. I assume most folks here would think it was an outrage.

I'm not against tough enforcement, but if you think that under current law and practice, even "tough" enforcement is going to identify and remove 10% of the illegals, I think you're dreaming.

This is a completely separate issue from border control -- and close to half of all "illegals" entered legally and just overstayed.

Let's have some serious discussion on methodology and cost, under current constitutional law and practice, of the "remove them all" option.

Now why in the world would you go and throw some common sense into the argument????

"HAHAHAHAHAHAHA .. Majority of the country has no clue as to who he is" Glad you find humor in this, I do not. Does it matter to me if "the majority of the country has no clue who he (Tancredo) is" ..not one bit.
