State of the Union Address LIVE THREAD 9:01pm EST.
White House .gov ^
Posted on 01/20/2004 4:01:54 PM PST by Hillary's Lovely Legs
President Bush will deliver the annual State of the Union this evening at 9:01pm (Eastern Time). The speech will be webcast live on the White House web site.
The President will discuss the extraordinary challenges our country has faced and the historic achievements we have made. Yet he will also stress that there.s much more for our country to do:
"America this evening is a Nation called to great responsibilities. And we are rising to meet them
" "We have not come all this way through tragedy, and trial, and war only to falter and leave our work unfinished. Americans are rising to the tasks of history, and they expect the same of us." He will also remind the American people that we are a Nation still at war, and our government is meeting its responsibility to protect the American people: "Our greatest responsibility is the active defense of the American people. Twenty-eight months have passed since September 11, 2001 over two years without an attack on American soil and it is tempting to believe that the danger is behind us. That hope is understandable, comforting and false."
"...America is on the offensive against the terrorists..." "As part of the offensive against terror, we are also confronting the regimes that harbor and support terrorists, and could supply them with nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons
" "...Because of American leadership and resolve, the world is changing for the better
" He will discuss the progress were making in Afghanistan and Iraq, and renew our commitment to ensuring those countries are free and peaceful: "The men and women of Afghanistan are building a nation that is free, and proud, and fighting terror
" "The work of building a new Iraq is hard, and it is right. And America has always been willing to do what it takes for what is right."
On priorities here at home, the President will discuss why hes optimistic about our growing economy, and call on Congress to take action that will help turn our economic recovery into a lasting recovery. He will call on them to help train Americans for the jobs of the 21st Century: "Americas growing economy is also a changing economy. As technology transforms the way almost every job is done, America becomes more productive, and workers need new skills
We must respond by helping more Americans gain the skills to find good jobs in our new economy." President Bush will also discuss the importance of health care and the major cause for why Americans lack health insurance: the rising costs of health care. "On the critical issue of health care, our goal is to ensure that Americans can choose and afford private health care coverage that best fits their individual needs. To make insurance more affordable, Congress must act to address rapidly rising health care costs." Finally, the President will argue that in a time of great change in our country and world, the things that make our country strong should never change: "We are living in a time of great change
Yet some things endure courage and compassion, reverence and integrity, respect for differences of faith and race. The values we try to live by never change. And they are instilled in us by fundamental institutions, such as families, and schools, and religious congregations. These institutions the unseen pillars of civilization must remain strong in America
"
"All of us parents, schools, government must work together to counter the negative influence of the culture, and to send the right messages to our children."

That's why the admin used to ask people not to on live threads. Some big pics even slow things down on broadband. These threads usually get a couple of thousand + replies.

That's quite a list. :o) I'm thankful some of our military are special guests of the First Lady. I'm also thankful Karen Hughes is a special guest. I wonder how much of a role, if any, she had in composing the President's speech.

The pander quotient promises to hit an all-time high tonight.
Wrong. There was plenty of pandering last year. It was pure trafficking in fear. A long list of Saddam's arsenal, poised to destroy us. I don't think he'll spend much time on that this year.
This year will more likely swing back to the standard political routine. Getting the spotlight on the lame little old lady who needs her drugs, etc et etc.

I can't wait.
The "Bush Has Lost My Vote" crowd, the Keyesters, the Brigadiers, the Paleocons from the Rockford Institute, and the Mexicans Under the Bed Crowd are all going to have a chance to scream at the TV and post incessantly on this thread.
After which they will go back to faithfully counting their Krugerrands.
Be Seeing You,
Chris

Correct. However CSPAN seems to have less background noise than networks or other cable news outlets most of the time.

I can't wait to see Pres. Bush speak tonight.
I've just came on to post this.
I hope Pres. Bush is flawless tonight!

"Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you.
The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
In company with our brave Allies and brother-in- arms on other Fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.
But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1904-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man.
Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men.
The tide has turned!
The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!
I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!
Good Luck!
And let us all beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.
Dwight D. Eisenhower." JUNE-2-1944

Actually, I don't think the RAT presidential candidates will be present for the SOTU. I know Edwards won't be there. He said so last night. These RATS have no respect for either the President or for the office. I'm sure the only reason hillary attends is so she doesn't get any bad press. I doubt the media will care one whit that the presidential candidates chose to campaign rather than attend the most important presidential speech of the year. Also, wesley clark is planning on holding a town hall meeting DURING the SOTU and then CNN will show him and his Bush-bashing devotees after the speech. I pray it backfires on that arrogant, disrespectful jerk.

I like to see the screengrabs, but I haven't the guts to ask the screen grabber to take the extra step to do a photoshop "save to web" compression, which can get just about anything down to 10k. I leave it to others to decide, post, not post, or police. I'm just a guest here. :)
