Who do you like?

Dang, I was afraid someone was going to ask that.

Down here southeast of Charlotte, we get almost no news on the District 5 race (parts of Winston-Salem, and a chunk of the Blue Ridge Mountains and their foothills, for those who don't know, and a safe GOP seat). State Senator Virginia Foxx and Mr. Robinson are the only two I have much familiarity with, and of the two, I'd prefer Ms. Foxx. I've seen accusations of RINOism, but based on her voting record and her declared positions, I don't find them credible.

Frankly, Robinson seems to be getting the most press and the most buzz just because he's black -- the novelty of a black Republican is attractive to some, I suppose. I find him a bit overbearing, and certainly this silly stunt doesn't elevate his stature in my eyes.

I haven't heard too much positive about Ed Broyhill; evidently, the genes have thinned out in that GOP dynasty. And I know nothing about Jay Helvey, other than that he only recently moved back to NC, and that he's largely self-financing his campaign -- neither of these disqualifies him, but they don't make me want to jump on his bandwagon.

So I'm undecided here, as I am on the Gubernatorial primary. There's something about Robinson that rubs me wrong, but I'll keep an open mind.

My understanding was that Ms. Foxx's position on on special rights for gays is closer to Barney Frank's than to Jesse Helms's. And weren't gay groups large donors to her previous campaigns?

The 5th CD is one of the most conservative and Republican districts in the nation, and whoever wins the GOP primary is guaranteed election come November. I don't see why we should have to settle for a moderate when there is a perfectly good conservative we can support---and oh yeah, he would help prove to the disbelieving public and the lying media that many blacks are indeed conservative and even Republican. We need Vernon Robinson in Congress. Virginia Foxx doesn't do anything for our chances of forging a majority coalition for the next 50 years, except maybe muddle our message and guarantee that blacks (most of whom believe in traditional values) will stay in the Democrat Party (if we aren't the socially conservative party, how exactly will we attract blacks to our party?).

Okay, fine. How would you rate Mayor Lee Myers as a future candidate?

Foxx is, in my view, a politician. Okay, stating the obvious, but a politician in every sense of the word. She'll vote fairly conservatively enough to satisfy the base, she'll talk the talk -- but "the talk" changes depending on who she's talking to. And when the going gets tough, the Foxx will make whatever deal she feels she can spin to the folks back home.

She's been endorsed by NC Right to Life in her state senate races, but my understanding is this House race is the first time she's had ONE stance on abortion (she's now 100% pro-life, I believe). She was pro-gay until this race as well. What are her real views? How will she vote? No one knows, except that she'll likely bring in pork and go with the Party.

In my opinion, Nathan Tabor (evangelical-type Soy Boy) and Vernon will vote conservatively as a spasmatic reaction.
