Winston-Salem official places Ten Commandments at city hall [Vernon Robinson - Black Conservative]

01/19/2004 Associated Press A city council member placed a granite block bearing the Ten Commandments on a walkway in front of a city hall deserted on Monday's Martin Luther King holiday.

Vernon Robinson, a black conservative who has been on the city council since 1998, said he and four helpers acted on the holiday because the barren adjoining parking lot allowed him to move in a truck and crane to position the one-ton block.

The monument — inscribed on one side with the Ten Commandments and on the other side with the Bill of Rights — was positioned on a landing of the stairway ascending to the 1930s city hall at dawn Monday, Robinson said.

Robinson said he had no permit or other authorization to place the monument on public property.

The $2,000 cost of buying and moving the four- tall, blue-granite block was entirely his own, said Robinson, who is running for a vacant U.S. House seat.

Mayor Allen Joines did not immediately return calls seeking comment on the city's response.

"This display is intended to acknowledge the undeniable role that the Ten Commandments and Bill of Rights have played in developing the American legal tradition," Robinson said in a telephone interview.

"These are the ideas on which society has been built and these works encapsulate the belief system on which the republic was founded."

Robinson said he was inspired to act by former Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore, who ordered a 2 1/2-ton Ten Commandments monument placed in the rotunda of the Alabama Judicial Building in 2001.

A federal judge found the monument to be an unconstitutional promotion of religion by government in 2002. Moore was removed from office last year for violating ethics rules by not obeying the federal court order to remove the monument.

Robinson said the monument was quarried and cut in Georgia and shipped from there.

I'd be more convinced of his conviction were he not running for office.

You don't know Vernon Robinson. His politics are motivated by his principles, not the other way around.

He is frankly, obsessed with the notion that we should have limited government and the greatest degree of personal freedom in a society, governed by time tested values, with a deep-seated reverence to an ultimate creator. He will pursue these values relentlessly, at personal risk, when some would say that discretion is the better part of valor.

And yes, he'll employ cheap guerilla theater to call public attention to a crisis where our society is headed over the edge.

I'm kinda partial to that kind of obsession.

While our society is tolerant and welcoming of all religions, its foundations are not based on Buddhism or Islam or Animism, for that matter. Our society, our system of government, and frankly the things that make our nation great stem from its Judeao-Christian heritage. To the extent that we remain connected to that heritage, we will survive as a people. If we lapse into multiculturalistic relativism as you appear to suggest, we will decline and fail.

Not sure you really have a dog in this hunt. This was done in the state of North Carolina by a city council member in the state of North Carolina. I think Judge Gaston laid it out pretty well what it meant

The most distinguished of these Catholics was William Gaston, one of the best and purest men whom North Carolina has produced. He had been a member of the State Senate, he was Speaker of the House of Commons, he was a representative in Congress; but his right to hold these offices had never been questioned. In 1833 he was chosen a justice of the Supreme Court by the Legislature. In a letter to Thomas P. Devereux he explains how he can hold office under this clause: The Constitution is based on the general principles of civil and religious liberty; therefore all citizens are competent to take and to hold office who are not clearly disqualified; it was in the power of the people to create penal incapacity, but persons must be unequivocally debarred before this can take effect; the only part of the Constitution that can be so interpreted is the thirty-second section; it is possible that some of the framers intended to exclude Catholics; but what is the Protestant religion? We have no establishment to determine the truth of that religion and pronounce on schism and heresy; this establishment is forbidden by the Constitution; the Constitution has not defined the Protestant religion, has not excluded Catholics or any other denomination eo nomine, and is therefore inefficient and unmeaning. Is a belief in the Catholic a denial of the truth of the doctrines of Protestants? Again, test laws and disqualifying enactments were familiar to England and her colonies; if this old system of proscription had been intended, can it be doubted that the intent would have been unequivocally manifested? Judge Gaston concluded that he was not disqualified and that he had “no right by any over-nice scruples to be instrumental in practically interpolating into that instrument an odious provision which it does not contain!”

Judge Gaston had assumed his seat on the supreme bench, and there had been no complaint; but it was thought best to amend the section when the matter came up for settlement in the constitutional convention. The debate on the section was long, but almost wholly in favor of amendment,2 the opposition argument being based largely on the fact that it was already dead. It was determined to substitute the word “Christian” for “Protestant,” and thus, in the eloquent words of Judge Gaston, was the carcass of this last remnant of religious persecution interred, “lest its pestilential effluvia should poison the atmosphere of Freedom.”

My understanding was that Ms. Foxx's position on on special rights for gays is closer to Barney Frank's than to Jesse Helms's. And weren't gay groups large donors to her previous campaigns?

The 5th CD is one of the most conservative and Republican districts in the nation, and whoever wins the GOP primary is guaranteed election come November. I don't see why we should have to settle for a moderate when there is a perfectly good conservative we can support---and oh yeah, he would help prove to the disbelieving public and the lying media that many blacks are indeed conservative and even Republican. We need Vernon Robinson in Congress. Virginia Foxx doesn't do anything for our chances of forging a majority coalition for the next 50 years, except maybe muddle our message and guarantee that blacks (most of whom believe in traditional values) will stay in the Democrat Party (if we aren't the socially conservative party, how exactly will we attract blacks to our party?).

Vriginia Foxx accepted large campaign donations from NC Pride, a gay rights group. When she planned on running for Congress, she returned the NC Pride donations and said she's against gay marriage. She claims to be pro-life, but nothing in her voting records shows that.
