[history]
President Bush's political strategists, taking note of the unpopularity of his immigration initiative as reflected in public-opinion polls, expressed confidence yesterday that the proposal will gain support as it is recast as an economic and homeland security issue.
"Once people have had a chance to educate themselves about the proposal and what it does, support for it will grow," said Christine Iverson, spokeswoman for the Republican National Committee.

"The 'let them eat cake' wing of the RNC is in charge."Heh -- And yet, like some 'Party-over-Principle/Whatever-The-King-Says' bots here on this board, they are shocked -- SHOCKED -- to find the rest of us not only refusing to kneel at the altar of blind subservience, but wheeling the guillotines into place.

My Fourth Prediction for 2004:
Bush and Fox are working out a deal involving Mexican ("it's all about") oil and a creative solution to an immigration/poverty problem -- that has as a juicy bonus a "tar baby" trap that will cause the the Dumbokrats to tumble into "de ole briar patch" as represented by a permanent loss of the heretofore robotic support of what is now America's largest minority constituent group.
Prediction Five:
I haven't quite figured out when the resultant Afro-Hispanic War will begin, but begin it will and will be a sight to behold.
Prediction Six:
The coming upheaval from the Bush-Fox accord will cause our Nations bloviated and corrupt unions to sink into the toaster and pop up for a well-deserved buttering.
Prediction Seven:
The Saudis and their Arabic fellow travellers soon will attempt to be very chummy with that old infidel Uncle Sam, who will have the resources to protect from al Qaeda and Associates only the oil fields of Iraq and Kuwait, our soon-to-be sister nations that will serve as the base of operations for the "stabilization" of the Middle East.
Prediction Eight:
The US will through the Saudis to the al Qaeda wolves. Said wolves will exterminate the "worldly, secular infidels" that make up the Saudi royal family, put that nation in the firm grip of Islamofascism, trash their oil fields in a show of bravado, and will never be allowed to redevelop them (they will be drained from under the sands via natural connections between oil deposits.
Prediction Nine:
Having killed the "goose that laid the golden egg," al Qaeda and other terrorist groups will (a) see their funding and geopolitical support dry up and blow away amid the desert winds.
Prediction Ten:
Al Qaeda and their fellow travelers (Hamas, PLA, etc.) will be hunted down and killed like the dogs that they are -- by the US and its new allies in the Middle East and in what will be a European continent that already is seeing and feeling the beginnings of their strangulation by rabid subsets within the "Religion of Peace."
And the world will be a better place for many decades to come -- all because of the genius of a Republican US administration run by "naive and ignorant cowboys who care only about oil and other manifestations of Big Business".....

"The problem of 10 million or whatever illegal immigrants already in our country cannot practically be solved by deporting them. Too many, too entrenched. It would take an effort resembling that used by Hitler to round up the Jews to deport all the illegal immigrants."My vote for one of the most painfully ridiculous hyperboles ever seen at FR...
BTW, a little advice -- stay away from ALL railroad cars and barbed-wire fencing.

What would I have Bush do?! Enforce the law...I found this on a website called "RightWingNews"...I like it...

"Here's How We Should Be Handling Illegal Immigrants"
Although all the details haven't been released yet, the new Bush administration immigration plan sounds like a disaster in the making. Apparently the Bush administration intends to reward illegal immigrants for breaking the law by eventually giving amnesty to any criminal who manages to successfully sneak across our borders to look for work. The way that the American people are being sold out on this issue, among others, is so disgraceful that I almost wish Bush had a primary challenger just to force Bush to stop acting like such a RINO on domestic issues. Were Bush serious about dealing with illegal immigration, let me give you an idea of about what he'd be doing...
We can get most illegal aliens to leave on their own if we...
-- Levy LARGE fines on employers who hire illegals. Flagrant or repeat violators could face jail time. Vigorously enforce this law and this will take away the jobs illegal aliens are coming here to get.
-- Allow illegal immigrants to receive no benefits or privileges other than emergency medical care. Cut off certain types of federal funding to states that provide services to illegals.
Then to get rid of the stragglers...
-- Give the police the authority and the funding to lock-up illegal aliens until they can be deported.
-- Make any illegal alien caught on US soil ineligible to ever become a citizen.
-- Do not give citizenship to the children of illegal aliens.
To discourage future problems with illegal aliens...
-- Double our manpower on the US border and equip them with radar stations and predator drones. We can control our borders; it's simply a matter of devoting the manpower and resources to the task.
-- Set up a work program with Mexico. Allow Mexican citizens who have filled out their paperwork to get work permits and come to the United States & work in a controlled and legal manner.
While these steps wouldn't solve our problems overnight, they would have a significant impact right off of the bat and within a few years, they would for the most part end illegal immigration to the US on a large scale. Too bad the Bush administration is more interested in scoring a few cheap points with business owners and Latino voters at the rest of America's expense, or he'd be proposing something along these lines...

"The difficulties come from conservatives who are angry at the proposal, which they say rewards illegal behavior..."
No I don't like it because it does not stop anyone from coming over the borders illegally in the future.
"at the end of the day this immigration announcement was every bit as much a homeland security announcement, because of the extra measures to tighten the borders..."
What a bunch of BS. Where and how does it make our borders more secure?
The only ones who will register will be the ones who don't wish us harm. How will this prevent those who wish to come across the border without registering?
I support Bush when it comes to his foreign policy initiatives, but his domestic policies leave me scratching my head sometimes.

Many of the illegals who work as pickers or on farms only come over seasonally. Many return back once the season is over.
I have no problem encouraging recruiting efforts in disadvantaged areas. I also have no problem with requiring seasonal help to return. But, Bush's proposal calls for anyone seeking a card to have a job lined up.
Bush's proposal has started the conversation. By adding things, like proof of recruiting in disadvantaged areas and no response, to show that "Americans won't do the work" is fine for me.
Right now this seems to be an all or none discussion on FR with most unwilling to sign on to anything but "find em, take em and ship em out."
To me..and many others, that is too simplistic, unrealistic, and will not pass muster.

The illegals will deport themselves when they are cut off from the great American mammary gland.
Ooops, there it is, the solution!

Many Freeper's assume because we doth protest that we are not conservatives. If they would look either at our profiles or the length of time we've been here and prior posts, they will see most of us signed onto FR because we are caring conservatives. We just happen to see issues separately than being blinded by a republican candidate.

How is it that if we are Patriotic Americans that we could even say this proposal is ok or any of the Bush policies towards amnesty? We after all are Americans first- Bushites second.
How can Bush love our troops as he does and do this to their families? We go fight for Freedom overseas but not here?
This are all mass contradictions of Bush to me. We were bright and fought these problems with Clinton so why is it so odd for all of us to be against 'any' amnesty?

Somehow I doubt that recasting it as a homeland security issue will fly unless Bush retracts his welcome mat to the illegal immigrants.
Well stated!

I thought Bush didn't believe in polls. Didn't he say something to the effect that he wouldn't govern by the polls? >>>>>
Seems like I heard that. However, in his book (1999), GWB wrote, "the most compassionate way to deal with illegals is to stop them at the border."
While border security 'improved' (10%) since 9-11, there never has been a 'plan' to seal it & stop the illegals, and many of the drugs.
Now, we have an internal poll by the Republican party that disagrees with the Bush stance. I wonder why the Repubicans are polling now? >>>>>>>>>
They'll just keep *spinning* the questions until they receive the answers they *want* to hear, then they'll have a 'poll' to publish, that backs their 'plan'........;o)
