We should build a suspension bridge linking North America and Europe
As we ponder going to the Moon again and to Mars, I started to think of projects we Americans can do that can better our lives and the planet.
I propose a suspension bridge be built starting from St. John's in Newfoundland, Canada terminating in Galway, Ireland with a connecting bridge from Belfast to Scotland and on into Europe. This Atlantic Euro-bridge would have two levels of 8 lanes per level and would be able to accommodate freight trucks, passenger vehicles and possibly a freight and passenger train.
The bridge would pay for itself over time via a toll fee.
The airline industry and the ocean freight industry may not like this mover of people and goods but it would be a boon to mankind and to commerce.
It would also help the economically depressed areas of New Foundland, Ireland and Scotland.

Could we? Should we? Just another thing Al-Queda could blow-up. Security would be so tight it would be unusable.

Your project is bigger; and I might as an economist, only warranted by the 'gee whiz' factor. You might what?

Could you not get an eminent domain and start it at the site of that ugly building in NY instead?

Does anybody realize how rediculously far a drive that would be. There is a reason this hasn't ever been brought up before.
To: Destro
I wonder if Map Quest will calculate the drive time?

TOLLS!! TOLLS!!! Right now you paid billions to "save" the airline industry. What return will we get from them? The toll aspect of this bridge would pay for its construction and upkeep.
Why did you assume "big govt"?

I was basically joking, but the post just said "we" should build the bridge, etc., and most around here think we should do whatever we want anywhere in the world.

You think small.
Cold-fusion powered hover-cars, capable of navigating through the roughest seas, for every man, woman, and child in America. Racing stripes optional.

Does anybody realize how rediculously far a drive that would be. It's going to be a pedestrian bridge.

Why ? So all the whacko Imams in London can flee to the US, not to mention all the so-called (mostly male moslem) asylum seekers the French wave thru the Chunnel. Not a good idea.

The bridge would pay for itself over time via a toll fee.Uh oh, I read the rest of your proposel. Okay, scrap you and the Citroen you drove in on. You know very well who'll end up paying the tolls for the Euros and it will be all one-way.
Don't we have enough problems with the Mexicans without building a suspension bridge to bring in the socialist Euros? And what we're going to do mining all the moon's green cheese is beyond me also. I had NO idea there were terrorists on the moon but there must be because President Bush wants to go there next.
Oh well, it's only money. Money is easy to print, I hear. Lots and lots of money......
