Something is wrong when a small group of people called a Library Board of Trustees determines that a public library must continue to allow access to pornography despite admittedly being outside the library's mission, the Township Committee claims it is powerless to stop the Board, and the citizens have no say.

Ruling could compel Wichita libraries to install porn filters Eagle staff and news services

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that the federal government can require public libraries to install computer filters or withhold federal funding if they don't comply.

The law is meant to block pornography from being seen in libraries, even though the filters would block other types of information as well.

The court's 6-3 ruling means public libraries that receive federal funding and don't have computer filters have a decision to make: comply or risk losing their money.

Jennifer Heinicke, special projects librarian for the Wichita Public Library, said the library is researching the cost of installing the filters.

The Wichita Public Library has applied for nearly $60,000 in federal funding for fiscal 2003, which starts July 1. About $22,000 of that could be threatened if the filtering software is not installed, Heinicke said.

That's great. We pay for our own censorship. The Telecommunications Act of 96 instituted the "Gore" tax now administered by the FCC. Remember how we had to wire the schools and libraries for the internet. The bill has come due.

Opponents of a measure designed to prevent children who use public library computers from seeing Internet pornography testified Tuesday that the measure would be expensive and ineffective.

The bill would require any library that receives state funding to install filtering software on all computers used by minors. The measure would allow citizens to seek court orders blocking public access to a library's computers until filters are installed. Proponents testified earlier that the software would block Web sites that contain obscene material.

Why not have it be opt-in. If your kid can't be trusted, put a big red dot on their library card so the librarians know to turn on filters for those kids. I don't use porn filters at home, and I trust my kids not to surf porn at the library. Scanning the logs and reprimanding kids that violate library policy should be enough.

Filters have a LOT of problems. MANY filters are very anti-gun and would filter out GOA, NRA, and FR.

I am not asking the government to legislate common sense. I am asking some on this thread to exercise it. And I agree with your call for adult supervision. I cannot sit with my child 24/7 when they are on the computer however. I installed a filter. It works well. Some sites that they may want to visit they can't. Considering one skipped a grade and the other both get straight A's, I don't think the filter has hindered their life to such an extent that big brother has turned them into lemmings. That arguement is bunk.

I have offered solutions to the filter arguements. They are common sense approaches. Provide several computers that are not filtered. Children must have an adult to use those few computers in a library. There's your adult supervision. The other computers are filtered, for those children who have parents that don't care or cannot find the time to always be with their children.

The library should be a safe place to leave a child to be. The library visit should not be a porn store.

The wonderful comments from others about filters not working correctly is so amazingly idiotic it is hilarious. No, it is not foolproof, especially if you spend $45 at walmart to buy it. A good filter placed at the DNS server can easily and effectively filter without causing nazi censorship or blocking "little girl" searches which would yield no results on a cheap filter. The filter arguement is a mute point, because it is made by those with limited computer technology experience. A library can be effectively filtered. Simple common sense accomodations can be arranged for unfiltered access.
