My kids were in a school overseas where they used that formula, some classes in Spanish, others in English. It didn't work very well, actually, mostly the American kids just sat there and looked at each other. What works better is a rigorous foreign language program, rather than simply expecting kids to pick it up by osmosis.

Now if you could have both, rigorous training combined with some osmosis...

But when I was a kid in Houston, Spanish language instruction started at the third grade as a required subject. I'm not sure how many years were required in junior high and high school, but there was a requirement.

I would be in favor of requiring "x" number of years of Spanish for everyone. But bilingual programs don't work unless the people leading them are talented and motivated, and the kids are equally motivated. Some experimental charter programs should be allowed, but the critique needs to be clear-eyed and unsentimental. If they do well, tell the world, but if they don't, tell the world.

Arizona adopted the nutty dual language program in their schools a few years ago, now they graduate students that are illiterate in both languages. The legislature has passed laws doing away with the program, the educrats have ignored the legislature, and retained the program. We got a new State Superintendant of Public Education a year ago, he is starting to force the schools to abandon the dual language programs.

Actually this is wonderful and to complain about it is foolish.

Students have been studying other languages for years. What do you think the language requirement in H.S. and colleges is all about?

This is not aimed at usurping English as the dominant language of the U.S. (and if you'll note, the world), but teaching students in a better way.

Just as we advocate students coming to the U.S. who do not speak English to be immersed in it, so students learning another language would experience the same.

India remained united as a country when the British left because it declared English as the official language of the country. This country can't be just two languages if it goes down that road - how dare we leave out the other minorities. English is the glue of this country. I for one don't want it to come unglued.

And answer me please why it is okay to teach Spanish immersion for English speaking kids because it works best, but Spanish speaking kids need bi-lingual, not immersion?

This is a good way to make the chidren deficient in both languages. This is just what has happened to children forced into bi-lingual classes( sometimes their parents are talked into it against their better judgement) in California.

What crap. This guy comes off like a bad salesman, "Research indidates that if current trends continue, the value of this land will most likely double, even triple in the next five years. The question is, can you afford not to buy these acres?" The schools are already failing at teaching Spanish speaking kids English, why would they be any better at teaching English speaking kids Spanish? Why should our kids have to learn Spanish anyways? I guess this superintendent thinks all cultures are equal and American kids would benefit greatly if they could understand the programs on Telemundo. The truth is, our way is superior. This is proved by the simple observation that millions and millions have fled north of the border because their societies failed them, not the other way around. These educators are hurting the ones they're trying to help the most. Intergration works, multiculturalism doesn't.

Because I was a gifted student, my parents put me into the French (Catholic) separate school system in Ontario. I never was able to grasp a working writing or conversational use of French and I had to suffer through a Franco-centric curriculum that told us how the English and Americans were all jerks who stole land from the Indians and the French (sound familiar?). The crummy, government-funded Catholic school system played no small role in my rebellion against both religion and liberalism, as well as my seething opposition to multiculturalism and bilingualism.

I got away from Latin America and came to this country to become an American. That was over forty years ago. I escaped a culture that to this day is a failure politically, socially and economically. It was the third world then and it remains so today. They did not have bilingual education then, so I learned English the hard way. I speak it better than most natives do.

It angers me that since I have been in this country the left continues to do everything possible to turn the US into just another third world cesspool. Multiculturalism isn't about respecting other cultures, it is about destroying ours.

We have turned from a nation open to immigration willing to admit people who will assimilate, to a nation open to colonization admitting people who have no interest in becoming Americans.

The nihilistic scumbags of the left want to commit western culture and society to tghe path of suicide and want to drag the rest of us along for the ride.

The great shame of it all, is that the golf playing country clubbers of the RNC and the Multi-nationalist corporatists are conspiring to achieve this end. All with global "free trade" and amnesty for millions who never "earned" entry into this country.

You can only stretch a rubber band so far and I fear the snapping point looms on the horizon. Like the Balkans we are becoming we may soon find that the various groups will resort to arms to displace the others. All in the name of a policy of divide and conquer so the left wing elites can consolidate their hold on power and the delusional republican elites go along for the ride thinking they will share in it.

I am glad In have no children, I would fear for their future once I left this life.
