OKLAHOMA CITY, Oklahoma (AP) --Charles Wyckoff and his wife had returned home after a funeral for their son when the phone rang.

"Hey, Dad," Kevin Wyckoff said.

"Huh. Well, damn boy. We just had your funeral today," his father said Monday, according to a transcript of the call provided Wednesday by the Oklahoma Corrections Department.

The family will not receive any immediate reimbursement for the funeral expense and may have to file a claim, Massie said. "We can't just write them a check."
Classic bureaucrat answer.

Must've been one of those "better late than never" obvious epiphanies -- her son's in prison! ;)

"Huh. Well, damn boy. We just had your funeral today,"

First clue we aren't dealing with Ozzie and Harriet here. But pretty familiar as family conversations go...

And why does all the good stuff happen in Salisaw or Tahlequah? Must be something in the water.

Trill and I have a friend whose parents are deputies in Salisaw. Lots of weird stuff goes on up there. And Trill's mom is in Tahlequah. Lots of strange stuff there, too.

I hold my breath everytime I go I-40 thru Ft. Smith/Salisaw. One time I got a hellacious ticket for speeding, another time someone knocked out the bridge, another TWO times I got there right in front of a tornado (ten minutes) and another time two hours after a tornado went thru. I think that there is a curse put on that area because of the hanging judge that used to inhabit Ft. Smith.

Exactly, who wrongly identified the guy as this other person?

And if Kevin is 'dead' officially, why is he still in prison? My lawyer would make the case that if I was dead, the body (even if breathing) should be released.

You have to wonder if Steve died under more suspicious circumstances than hanging himself. Wonder if he had help?

That was my first thought.

You'd think they might want to check.

"Huh. Well, damn boy. We just had your funeral today,"

What a loving statement considering they just found out that their SON is in fact still ALIVE.

It's no stretch to figure out why he ended up where he is.

I have this picture of a grizzled Robert Duvall and a doughty Sally Field standing inside this old wood-beaded board kitchen with red plastic table-clothed windows and a resigned acceptance on their faces that tells us that some bad times just won't go away.
